SU Stock Market Situation Advancement & the Technological Field Literature Review

SU Stock Market Situation Advancement & the Technological Field Literature Review

Overview ***(The attached file is a rough draft of the paper, and in italics are the professor’s comments about the rough draft) I really like this idea. I think the topic is timely and relevant. In terms of your lit review, I think you may need to pull back from a bugs life and look at revolutionary media more broadly. What does current research say about how social media has been used in social movements like what we’re seeing with r/wsb and GME? You’ll want to think through your specific research question and also identify a theory to guide your thinking here. Below are detailed instructions for writing your literature review. This is the first draft so the key here is to just get something down on paper. The lit review should be approximately 2,000 words and should include a copy of your bibliography in proper APA format. Again, please use APA format to cite your sources. Once your draft is submitted, I will review it and give you feedback regarding how to best edit your piece for the final draft. Writing a Literature Review A literature review is a specific type of academic essay that gives a critical summary of the available scholarly articles, books, and other sources that pertain to a chosen research area, topic, or theory. The author of the literature review takes a step beyond simply summarizing the literature and adds critical evaluations and synthesis of the themes found across the literature. Writing a literature review is often the first step taken before conducting a research project. Scholarly articles describing original research begin with a review of the literature regarding the topic, then go on to describe the experiment or study in detail. A literature review can also be the first step in writing a research paper. It helps you, the writer, organize your research into themes. Organizing your Literature Review Similar to many academic papers, literature reviews have 3 basic elements: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Introduction You will define your topic and establish the purpose of the literature review in the introduction. This is where you will introduce your research question. Body You will discuss the articles as they relate to each theme you’ve chosen. Each paragraph should discuss one specific theme and discuss all of the articles that support or refute that theme. Useful language to connect articles within the paragraph include: ‘One trend in the research is…’, ‘Studies show that…’, ‘There is disagreement among scholars about…’ Use subheads to organize the body of your paper into approx. three themes that summarize the different elements of the research you’ve gathered. Be sure to discuss how the literature you’re summarizing relates back to your specific research question. How will this research help you make predictions/ hypotheses related to your own research question. The writing should be in your own words as much as possible. Keeps quotations from sources to a minimum. Conclusion You will summarize the themes you discussed in the body of your paper. You will also discuss areas of controversy in the literature. Finally, you will discuss the gaps in the research and identify areas that need further study. References The references section has the full citations of the resources you discuss in your paper presented in APA style (Links to an external site.). This will be on a separate page from the rest of your paper. Jarrod Billig Professor Carlson CMME 2000-01 February 5, 2021 Literature Review- Proposal For my research assignment, I decided to engage in the topic of the current stock market situation. In the past 10 days, the stock market had gone through some interesting changes, changes that resulted in ‘the little guy’ winning. The current stock market extravaganza symbolically relates to Flik and the ants’ fight against Hopper and his grasshopper army in the animated movie ‘A Bug’s Life’. In short, there was a reddit page that 250 thousand plus people engaged with, all with the purpose of hammering down on the hedge funds and billionaires that have the power to manipulate stocks in order to gain large amounts of profits. The way these reddit folks attacked the hedge funds and wall street billionaires was simple, they would bet against what the hedge funds were rooting for. This started a movement where thousands of people were purchasing the GameStop and AMC stocks. Inflating the traffic of buying and selling of these stocks made the prices skyrocket, causing the hedge funds to lose millions and millions of dollars. They struck back the very next day however, when Robinhood, a common stock trading platform, banned users from buying certain stocks, so that the hedge funds could cut their losses. Relating back to ‘A Bug’s Life’, the ants were all afraid of the grasshoppers, and the grasshoppers took advantage of the fear and made the ants offer up their food they collect each harvest season. Flik, an ordinary ant who has a reputation for having bad ideas, stands up to Hopper, the leader of the grasshoppers. This made Hopper very upset, so much in fact that he knows he needs to send a message to the Ants. After some time, three grasshoppers laugh about the fact that one ant is no match for a grasshopper. Hopper makes a statement about those grasshoppers, by drowning them in food. Here’s how the scene plays out: Hopper: ‘You let one ant stand up to us, then they all might stand up! Those puny little ants outnumber us a hundred to one and if they ever figure that out there goes our way of life! It’s not about food, it’s about keeping those ants in line.’ Connecting back to the current stock market situation, Hopper and his gang of grasshoppers symbolize the hedge funds and billionaires, while the ants symbolize everyday hardworking citizens. Much like Flik, people from all across the nation stood up against Wall Street and bought stock in companies that were on a decline. The impact made in the few days it worked was tremendous. GameStop’s stock rose nearly 2,000% and AMC’s stock rose nearly 1,000%. This proved that everyday people outnumber the billionaires, and at a much larger scale than 100 to 1. Relating back to Hopper, when he states ‘It’s not about the food, it’s about keeping those ants in line’ he symbolizes the wealth and power that Wall Street and its billionaires have. Those billionaires do not sweat over losing millions, since they seemingly have an endless stream of wealth. However, they do not want people finding a sense of hope, hope that could lead to change. They want to make sure they keep us all in line, which is why Robinhood banned users from trading stocks like GameStop and AMC. Overall, this movement has opened the eyes of many, convincing people that it may be time for change, and the billionaires know it is coming.
