Gloria
Gloria Everly, an 84-year-old Caucasian female, was transported to the hospital via ambulance following a fall at her residence. Based on exam and X-ray, the physician determined a right hip fracture and recommended full hip replacement to secure the best possible outcomes and quality of life for Mrs. Everly.
Interdisciplinary Team Meeting
The interdisciplinary team, consisting of physician, surgeon, nurse, and social worker, met with Mrs. Everly and her son John, with whom she lived, to discuss the surgery, which would be in-depth due to the severity of the fracture.
Mrs. Everly agreed to the surgery but reported that she was a Jehovah’s Witness and
did not want anesthesia or a blood transfusion due to her religious beliefs.
John Everly concurred that his mother followed the religion faithfully and would not do
anything to undermine it, even if it meant risking her health or comfort.
The surgeon stated that there was no way the team could ethically engage in the
surgery without anesthesia.
