Development Discussion
Purpose: Understanding the physical, cognitive, and process of developing a sense of self will help you help and understand the complex interactive nature of child development.
Part 1: After reading the selected pages from Chapter 6 of the textbook (pg. 162-176; 188-194) and watching the Adolescent Brain Ted Talk E», answer the following questions in three to five sentences for each question:
1. What are the roles of neurons and synapses?
2. What is the difference between experience-expectant and experience-dependent brain development?
3. What role does myelination and synaptic pruning play in brain development through childhood and adolescence?
Part 2: After reading the selected pages from chapter 11 of the textbook (pg. 36-372), and watching Crash Course Psychology: The growth of Knowledge Gx answer the following questions.
1. Reflect on the prereading questions at the beginning of chapter 11 and the answers and discussion provided in the chapter. Describe two questions/areas that you didn’t know about and/or found interesting.
2. How did you recall your sense of self and identity changing as you grew up and into early adulthood?
3. How do you feel your family and culture growing up impacted your self-concept as a child?
