R1. Establish a good roadmap thesis statement. This is a one sentence argument of your whole paper. The thesis statement should be placed at the end of the first paragraph.

R2. Ensure that the first sentences of each subsequent paragraph contains an idea and not just a fact. Facts are not good topic sentences. Avoid quotes or stating evidence.

R3. Underline your thesis statement and the first sentences of the subsequent paragraphs. Read the thesis statement and only the first sentence of each paragraph. See if they makes sense together. Check for the logic, coherence and focus. Then revise or insert new topic idea sentences which link to the thesis argument. This will make the paper tighter and more focused.

R4. Break up large paragraphs. Each paragraph should be a hand. Topic Idea is the thumb. The 4 fingers are the Supporting Evidence. If the paragraph is too big, it loses focus.
