In the industry, individuals are required to have a minimum level 2 in fitness instructing issued from the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) before they can be employed as a qualified practitioner. In some circumstances, equivalent qualifications at level 2 can be considered if issued from another awarding organisation/company like BTEC, NVQ or if you have a degree in the field, however, for the purpose of recognition the award should come from the Register of Exercise Professionals. In order to work as a Personal Trainer within the gyms you are required by law to possess a minimum qualification of a level 3 in personal training once again issued by the Register of Exercise Professionals. This qualification opens up more doors for a trainer as it allows you to work as a self-employed practitioner deliver one to one and groups sessions to clients from within a gym, studio, park or clients home. G (2009).SPECIALIST AREA; SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: My specialist area is Personal Training working at the one of the highest levels within the fitness industry working with a variety of different people who are seeking expertise knowledge on various ways to improve their health and well-being. For example, if you want to work as a fitness instructor you must have a minimum of a level 2 qualification issued by a recognised awarding body so that the award can be registered on to the Register of Exercise Professionals. The same goes for working as a personal trainer, you will need to have a level 3 qualification issued by a recognised awarding body. If you have a higher qualification like a degree in fitness or sports, you may still be required to undertake the level 3 award, your higher qualification might warrant you from taking the level 2 qualification but that will require approval from the gymnasium and also from the Register of Exercise Professionals beforehand, Petty (2009).(continued)UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION FROM EMPLOYERS OR WORKPLACE:If you are working within an organisation, franchise or gym interacting with client members delivering physical training and there are new sources of information that needs to be addressed to staff then normallyit should come from the general manager of the premises. He/she willdeliver the up to date information directly to all members of staff alternatively, if there is information that is directly related to the fitness team then the manager will delegate it to the manager of the fitness department to give to the fitness team.If you are working as a freelance trainer/sole-trader who is self-employed then it is the trainer’s responsibility to remain up-to-date with all current legislations that are coming out from the awarding bodies and health and well-being industry, Petty (2009).TASK 1.2 ANALYSE PHILOSOPHICAL ISSUES RELATING TO EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN OWN SPECIALIST AREA PHILOSOPHICAL ISSUES; QUALIFICATION FRAMEWORK:The awarding body Skills Active speaks the two main qualifications that considered in the fitness industry, there are two main qualifications that are looked at before any work can commence:Level 2: This level is ideal for those who are interest in delivering health and fitness at the basic level, all candidates will be required to have a basic knowledge of health and fitness before embarking onto the course. The course will look at five mandatory units that well need to be completed and passed in order to receive the level 2 award. There are five main topics that will completion:Skills Active 2016Anatomy and physiology for exercisePrinciples of exercise, fitness and healthPromote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreationWork with clients to help them adhere to exercise and physical activityReflect on and develop own practice in providing exercise and physical activity.Also, the instructor will need to highlight what specialist pathway they would like to take also, choosing from one of the followings:Gym-based exerciseExercise to musicWater-based exerciseExercise and physical activity for children.Level 3: This qualification level will explore in depth knowledge about the anatomy and how it works, the level 2 qualification is a pre-requisite before embarking on this qualification. There four main topics explored with this course as outlined below:Anatomy and physiology for exercise and healthPromote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreationApply the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme.Plan, market and sell services.A difficulty someone can face to become a trainer is not having the knowledge about the health and fitness industry as a whole and this will be an issue for them with undertaking the about qualifications in the framework as both a theoretical and practical based learning. Skills Active 2016(continued)SPECIALIST WORK ETHICS: To be a specialist in anything you do requires tremendous effort towards reaching that goal and may require additional knowledge from other sources to help widen current knowledge on subject area. Within the fitness industry it is no different at all, the more knowledge you have the better your work effect will become. I have highlight some examples below from my field.Fitness Instructor: This is the minimum role you can undertake within the fitness industry to work, it allows you to be flexible, you will be required to perform all duties solely within the fitness centres doing inductions, possible taking classes, general housekeeping duties like(cleaning) assist customers when needed with equipment and possibly taking a class (if qualified to do so). Other than this your role is generally the same at level 2.Personal Trainer: After you have completed your fitness instructor course at level 2 you can immediately take the level 3 in personal training. Once you become qualified you can then dictate when you and how you work with your customers as you are legally able to register as a self-employed sole-trader, delivering one to one and group sessions to customers. These qualificationsallow you to also create your prices for trading to groups or one to one when delivering a session, for example you might charge £30 per hour or more for your service to help customers reach their goals. This is a service that you cannot do with only a level 2 qualification as a fitness instructor. So, there is purpose to working harder within the fitness industry.Petty (2009).SPECIALISED EDUCATION; BEHAVIORISM:As human beings our behaviours tend to change as we learn and as we grow, with everything we learn we put into practice and the more practice we learn the experience we get along the way. For example, a baby will cry for attention when they are young, their behaviour will be expressed through tantrum, but as they grow older they will express new ways of getting attention. It could be verbally or through their actions (behaviour) depending on the situation and what they need attention for at that moment.When I am designing a fitness curriculum for a learner or a group of learners, I take into consideration what will be taught to the learners and also what they will be gaining from the curriculum, the idea behind the structure is to target the goals that the learner wishes to work on. If over a course of time the learner feels that what they are learner is not support them in the long run leading up to their goals then they will become disengaged from the program as they will see it is off no benefit to them. During this time their behaviour towards the program may become negative and this can express through their body language differently for example arriving late for class and leaving earlier or just not engaging with the lesson.Pavlov,I (1897).(continued)STUDENT DEVELOPMENTAL ISSUES: Some students will have development issues that can cause them to have severe difficulties with progression and learning for example disabilities, learning disabilities, language and independence. As a result, it will be more difficult to progress with the physical and theoretical parts of their learning in physical education and can slow them down as they may become demotivated as a result feeling that their reasons for no progression are beyond their control.Pavlov,I (1897).TASK 2.1 DESCRIBE THE AIMS AND STRUCTURE OF KEY QUALIFICATIONS IN OWN SPECIALIST AREAAIMS; AWARDING BODY SPECIFICATIONS:The aims of the awarding bodies (listed below) for certifying all personal trainers and fitness instructors is that all those working within the fitness and health industry are qualified to a level that allows them to deliver safe and effective training and advice to client members. The key qualifications to work within a gym legally are the level 2 fitness instructor award and level 3 personal trainer certification. Skills Active 2016(continued)EMPLOYABILITY: Level 2 Fitness Instructor: There are no minimum entry requirements to take this award but one of the specification are that you are familiar with the usage of the fitness industry and gymnasiums. This award will allow to work within the industry and within any franchise gym, however as a level 2 holder the instructor will only be allowed to work in certain areas doing certain tasks. For example, group inductions, taking classes qualified to teach and general house keeping duties. This level will not allow you to work in depth with client members and give one to one support or guidance but is a minimum for requirement for leisure centre working.Level 3 Personal Trainer: The minimum specification to take this award is the previous level 2 in fitness instructing or higher qualification like a degree. This qualification will allow you work anywhere with clients including their homes, gyms and local parks it will also allow you to work in any gym within Europe also. The aims of the qualification are to enhance your current knowledge on the anatomy and also other areas to make you a better trainer.Level 4 Advanced Personal Trainer: The minimum you must have before doing this course is a level 3 or degree in sports, science and exercise. This qualification will allow you to work with specialise clients referred for exercise such as pre and post-natal/low back/GP referrals, making you a more better trainer to your clients.(Skills Active 2016)STRUCTURES; UNITS OF LEARNING: The level 2 teaches learners about the physical anatomy and how to use the equipment and resources within the gyms and work the various areas like free weights, cardio section and multi gym area. This unit will also focus on the health and safety aspects of working within a gym and general protocol procedures that must be adhered to meet customer and gym expectations and also to avoid any legal actions. The level 3 qualification will make learners a more specialised trainer by teaching students how to still work towards achieving client goals without the usage of gym equipment and the facilities, the learner will learn how to work without these and still aim towards achieving client goals and exceeding their expectations by working in various locations other than a gym facility. In addition, the level 4 award will allow the trainer to work with specialised clients who have been referred for exercise giving them expertise advice and assistants to meet their overall goals.(Skills Active 2016)WORK EXPERIENCE OR PLACEMENT: Arrangements can be made to for students who are studying in the fitness industry to gain some work experience but this will need to be discussed separately with the management of the gyms. If you are not qualified then you maybe allowed to work as a volunteer but your duties will be extremely minimised for health and safety and policy as you are not qualified to give any advice in the area of health and fitness. However, if you are doing an apprenticeship you maybe allowed to shadow a staff member to gain experience and see how they work with other members.DESCRIBE THE AIMS AND STRUCTURE OF LEARNING PROGRAMMES IN OWN SPECIALIST AREA.AIMS; ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES TO SUIT BOTH THE SUBJECT SPECIALISM AND THE NEEDS OF LEARNER: Within the fitness industry all aims of exams and assessments are for the instructor or trainer to assess physical activities that the learners can demonstrate in a safe and effective manner without causing any injuries our danger to themselves or others. In addition, the learners must also be able to highlight what area of muscles each activities target, for example assessment activities such as bench press, chest fly’s and push-ups all are activities that focus on the pectoralis major muscle group and the learners must know how to perform these activities correctly.Petty, G (2008)ESTABLISHING LEARNERS NEEDS: When a learner has their induction with the trainer on their induction day, after completing all the necessary paperwork, they will be asked about their interests in physical fitness and what are their main goals and what they hope to achieve. The learner may respond by saying “I need to lose weight for my upcoming wedding” therefore the trainer has established that the learner needs to lose a specific amount of weight in order to look and feel great on their big day. With this information the trainer can then assess the learner’s currents level in terms of where their weight is at the moment and also give them advice on how much is appropriate to lose before the big day arrives so that the necessary SMART goals can be produced for the learner.Petty, G (2008)STRUCTURE; APPROPRIATE TIMEFRAME: As all learners will have different needs and goals they will each require separate timescales to reach and achieve their long-term goals, all timescales will be arranged with a qualified trainer who will assess the needs of the learner and will discuss the appropriate timescale to complete that goal with each individual learner. However, all timeframes are usually scheduled between eight and twelve weeks but may require an extension if the learner is unable to commit to the frequency of their attendance schedule or at the end of the timeframe their goal has still not been achieved.Hough, P & Penn, S (2016)INTENSIVE: When I am coaching an amateur or professional boxer due to the nature of their training regime they will be required to do more physical activities throughout the day and coming weeks leading up to a scheduled boxing match to ensure they are in the best possible physical condition ready for their fight. Depending on their match they maybe scheduled to start training as early as 4-5am doing road work (running 3-8miles in distance), with a small amount of time allocated to rest afterwards the learner will then be required to return later that afternoon to do a schedule training session with their coach this could last between 1 ½ – 3 hours long. Oliver, I (2006)EXPLAIN HOW OWN APPROACH TO PLANNING AND PREPARATION FOR THE DELIVERY OF A LEARNING PROGRAMME IN OWN SPECIALIST AREA ENABLES ITS AIMS TO BE METPLANNING; INITIAL ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS ESTABLISHING NEEDS:The first initial assessment method that I use with my learners is called a Physical Active Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q), this is a fitness medical reading form that we use to assess the learner physical state and to ensure that they are in good enough health before doing any physical fitness training. The document outlines a variety of questions learners previous and current health status so that appropriate activities can be designed for their fitness programme to reach their goals. The second assessment is observation, watching the learners perform physical activities to observe their strengths and weaknesses not just on that activity but overall as sometimes more than one muscle group maybe used to do an exercise.Hough, P & Penn, S (2016)SETTING SPECIFIC ACHIEVEMENT GOALS AND TIMESCALES FOR ACHIEVEMENT: All learners will be given individual targets which they need to achieve by the only to achieve these targets is with practicing constantly so that progress can be made gradually without having any physical strain on the anatomy. For example, a learner may only be able to perform eight push-up repetitions within a set, the goal for the next session will be to increase that number to ten making it harder for the learner to achieve as they are now working beyond their comfort(continued)zones. The overall goal would be to increase to twelve to fifteen push ups per set but each session an additional one extra would be added to the target. Hough, P & Penn, S (2016)PREPARING; SPECIALIST RESOURCES: Some learners will require additional resources in order for their goals to be met, sometimes it is required to refer a learner to a specialist for their knowledge and expertise on how to reach the learners goals. For example, a learner may require additional support with their diet so they will be referred to either a nutritionist or dietitian for that support. In addition, a learner may require support with their flexibility and stretching so the would be referred to a yoga instructor and class who extra support with their stretching whilst they are training with myself to reach their goals.Petty, G (2009).SPECIFIC ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES:(continued)Some learners will be tasked with what is called a superset once they have reached a certain level in their fitness training. This assessment challenges the learner to perform two separate activities in one go with any rest period until the second activity is complete. For each activity the volume of repetitions can be agreed with the trainer before the start but usually the learner is expected to perform nothing less than double digits. Using the super sets as an assessment allows the trainer to see where the learner is in terms of strengths and weaknesses and also fitness levels. For the learner they can push themselves to complete their sets of activity as each set will now be doubled for them by two separate activities. Hough, P & Penn, S (2016)In addition, there is another assessment method called a tri-set similar to the super-set assessment but with three separate exercises to perform for one completed set. Once again, this assessment challenges the learner to push themselves harder to finish the set strong, once the complete on exercise the move onto the second and that is completed they then move over to the third and final one of the activity. With roughly a 60-120 second rest period the learner will be required to perform the same activity up to three times in a row before finally completion. The trainer will be assessing the learner techniques in breathing, posture,(continued)movement, lifting etc they are more concern with the quality of the effort made by the learner rather than the quantity of poor technique shown by the learner.Petty, G (2009).ANALYSE THE INCLUSIVENESS OF OWN APPROACH TO THE PLANNING AND PREPARATION OF A LEARNING PROGRAMME IN OWN SPECIALIST AREA.INCLUSIVE APPROACHES; INTEGRATING EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY: When planning and organising classes, I make sure that all the activities within the class are suitable for all learners to complete including those who may have any physical disabilities. I do this by analysing each of the learner’s capabilities first of in the session as it is difficult to do this before each session starts unless the learners have already had a one to one session or induction with myself. In addition, I ensure that all learners of different backgrounds, religion, genders and those who may have any disabilities are all working together throughout the class, where it is possible I would have them pair up and work with each other rotationally. For example, in a boxing class I would have them pair up together to do sparring and when we are doing a class circuit they would also be working together where the activity requires it.Petty, G (2009).ACCESSING LEARNING AT APPROPRIATE LEVEL: The best time to plan appropriate learning activities for each individual learner is when they have their induction and complete the physical active readiness questionnaire. The document will highlight any issues the learner may have that will prevent them doing certain activities in their learning or doing activities set at a certain intensity level. Another way for me to verify that the has access an appropriate activity and at a certain level is to observe thoroughly doing the activity and working their gradually through the levels of intensity. Through observation I can assess whether or not the activity is appropriate for learner to reach their long-term goals.Petty, G (2009).SUPPORTING INDEPENDENT LEARNING: If a learner was using the gym without booking a one to one session with myself, depending on whether or not I am on duty as an instructor that day, they can still approach me and ask for support if they require help. As a fitness instructor also, I job would be to support all members within the gym where possible attending to their individual needs. If a learner has a question about their fitness program designed by me they can ask me directly for clarification without booking a one to one session. This is a free service and is open to all members and instructors are there to support the learners whilst on the gym floor. Booking a one to one session with the trainer means you get one to one direct support to reach your goals, the learner maybe asked to do certain activities set by the trainer that they must complete to help reach their goals. Petty, G (2009).EXPLAIN HOW OWN APPROACH TO THE PLANNING AND PREPARATION OF A LEARNING PROGRAMME IN OWN SPECIALIST AREA TAKES ACCOUNT OF KEY CURRICULUM ISSUES, INCLUDING THE ROLE OF NEW AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES:KEY CURRICULUM ISSUES; CURRENT CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS: When designing a 12-week learning plan for learners within the fitness industry for them to reach their goals, there a number of issues that may affect the overall learning outcomes of the plan. As trainers we call these issues (barriers) that are unavoidable and sometimes necessary for the learner to deal with. For example:Work: the learner may have work commitments that prevent them from attending their training as frequently as required and these circumstances are sometimes unavoidable.Childcare: Attending to childcare issues of any kind.Finance: Not having enough money to pay for their one to one sessions.Motivation: Feeling demotivated, lack of motivation.These are some of the issues that will affect the learner and their learning from their 12-week training plan, although there are ways to work around these issues it is still sometimes a factor and a barrier for the learner so they are unable to commit to the curriculum program. The 12-week program will require that all learners individually commit to the timetable and schedule of the program in order reach their long-term goals.Petty, G (2009).INCORPORATE A SPECIALIST LEARNING ENVIRONMENT: As a personal trainer I am qualified to deliver exercises from different environments that are discussed with the learner for the choice of preference. The locations can be internal (gym based) alternatively I can operate the necessary activities from client’s home, parks or studio’s. By using these locations, it can support the learner financially in terms costs for gym entry fees and also operating from their homes is also to the clients benefits and comfortability. Petty, G (2009).NEW APPROACHES TO LEARNING AND TEACHING:A new approach is to give positive feedback to learners when they are learning from their trainer, identify their efforts and make them known, this will make the learner aware that they are progressing in their learning and that they doing it right. Should the learner constantly be reminded about their mistake this will encourage negative behaviour and lack of effort and willingness to learn.Where possible adapt the lessons to meet all the learners individual needs, sticking to the tasks but making sure that lesson is interacting all participants where possible to encourage learning engagement amongst the learners.When a 12-week learning plan has been developed for a learner, additional areas may need to be place in order for the goal to reached and support the progress of the learner. For example, the learner may require addition fitness activities put in place like swimming, so they will need to do swimming lessons to help with their fitness and stretching techniques. In addition, the learner may require support with flexibility so they will be referred to do yoga to support their area of development. Petty, G (2009).(continued)NEW AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES; SPECIALIST LEARNING PACKAGES: If a learner wanted to learn about ways to keep fit and active but from home, I can advise the learner on using home DVD’s created by gym motivators to get them into the habit of exercising from home. The DVD I would recommend all depend on what the learner hopes achieve but If it general fitness then I would recommend The Insanity Workout.This is an example of what an Insanity workout programme will look like for a learner, but, it will be demonstrated to them on a DVD format so that they can see and hear the activities whilst in motion. Alternatively, they watch online using the you tube channel.Petty, G (2009).ANALYSE WAYS IN WHICH TEACHING AND LEARNING RESOURCES, INCLUDING NEW AND EMERGENING TECHNOLOGIES, MEET THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF LEARNERS IN OWN SPECIALIST AREA. LEARNING RESOURCES; DEVELOP SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE: In order to meet the needs of learners on occasion I may be required to undertake further specialist knowledge in my field by doing additional course whether that’s CPD’s (continuous professional development) or other course like BTEC, City and Guilds, Degree awards. For example, when I start delivering boxing classes I was required to take a coaching licence course or minimum to take a Boxercise course levels one and two teaching self defence using focus mitts. Petty, G (2009).AUDIO OR VISUAL RECORDING: When delivering a session to learners sometimes it is useful and a good idea to use the latest smart phone technology to record the work being done within the class whilst the learners are remaining active. The purpose of using this method of recording is assess the techniques of the learner whilst they are doing a fitness activity, there maybe something that I the trainer didn’t notice whilst they were exercising. Also, the recording is easier to view once uploaded onto a pc or viewed on the smart phone, in addition it is a good way to explain feedback to the learner by highlighting exactly what areas where good and what areas still require assistants.Petty, G (2009).TECHNOLOGIES; USE OF COMPUTERS: Sometimes during a lesson it is useful to record a video of the session with the learners performing individual or group activities using a smart phone device. After recording the video, the footage can be uploaded onto a PC and training footage, also the learners can be sent a copy of the footage for there own usage and later if permitted they can upload onto social media channels for advertisement like Facebook, Instagram or twitter.Petty, G (2009).ANALYSE THE INCLUSIVENESS OF OWN USE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING RESOURCES IN A SPECIALIST AREAINCLUSIVENESS OF RESOURCES; EASE OF ACCESS TO LEARNERS: Working as a personal trainer I need to be available for my clients to reach me to book sessions or contact via any other method to discuss trainer phone, email, what’s app, social media etc. The premises I operate my business from as a trainer is accessible for my learners between 5:30am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 2pm Saturdays and 9am to 1pm Sundays, making it easier for the learners to have access to my services fitted around work commitments. In addition, the learner can also text me with direct messages which I can reply to within 24 hours of receiving and same goes for contacting me via social media or emails if they send messages I can also respond inside 24 hours.Petty, G (2009).STIMULATING AND ENGAGING: One the resources used in my teaching practice is the fundamentals of the sport of boxing, practicing the art of fighting with the fists, especially with padded gloves usually 14oz or 16oz in a roped square ring according to prescribed rules (the Queensberry Rules). The sport encourages confidence, disciplines, fitness, agility, thinking and conditioning as the learners will be multi-tasking throughout the learning process using not just practically but also audio and kinaesthically also thinking, hearing and listening at the same time.Petty, G (2009).STUDENT INPUT AND OWNERSHIP OF LEARNING: As a trainer when delivering a learner plan/scheme of work to a learner their first input into that plan is of their own choice, what they want to work and what they feel is most relevant to them in terms of fitness and health. In addition, the program can only be a success if the learner puts the effort into their work meaning, if the learner doesn’t make any effort then no progress will come out of their plan and their goals will not be reached in anyway.Therefore, ownership of the outcome is on the learner, the trainer does the deliver on how to train someone to reach their goals but the full effort and commitment is on the learner. However, the learner can request how long they want to take roughly to reach their goals if they have other commitments that may interfere, the trainer will discuss from their professional point of view roughly how long it will take to reach their goals.Petty, G (2009).LIASE WITH OTHERS WITHIN A SPECIALIST AREA TO DEVELOP OWN PRACTICE LIAISON; EXPERIENCED COLLEAGUES: Some personal trainers are more experienced than myself with degrees in biology, nutrition and sports science, their advanced knowledge can be of great use when it comes to developing an understanding how the anatomy works towards achieving fitness goals. In example, if I am unsure of how a fitness program I have developed will work with a learner then I can request additional support from them to verify that the plan I have developed will be appropriate for that learner.
