Explain concisely in your own words what you believe are the key overall features of an
‘Enlightened Planning’ (EP) approach to project risk management in the execution and delivery

needs to be modified for other project lifecycle stages and linked to operations and overall
corporate management. This part of your essay will be a largely descriptive summary of your interpretation of the lectures and associated reading. It will explore the nature and role of basic
frameworks like the project lifecycle, the process phase structure and the seven Ws to
demonstrate your grasp of the central core of the unit’s material as a whole, and it should be
approached with a view to demonstrating this understanding.

Part 2 30% of the total marks 900 words maximum
For the identify (sources of uncertainty, responses and conditions) phase of the EP approach, in the
execution and delivery strategy progress stage of a project’s lifecycle, explain concisely in your own
words what you believe are the key features of an EP approach, briefly comparing these features
with the PMI PIMBOK approach or any other form of common practice you are familiar with. Your
discussion should demonstrate your ability to understand a particular area of the course material in
depth, based on selective reading, critical analysis and the case study exercises. Use examples to
illustrate your discussion if you wish, but concentrate on concepts and principles. Build on your
Part 1 answer, avoiding repetition of earlier discussion.

Part 3 30% of the total marks 900 words maximum
For another of the phases of the EP approach, in the execution and delivery strategy progress stage
of a project’s lifecycle, explain concisely in your own words what you believe are the key features of
an EP approach, comparing these features with the PMI PIMBOK approach or any other form of
common practice you are familiar with. Your discussion should demonstrate your ability to
understand another particular area of the course material in depth, based on selective reading,
critical analysis and the case study exercises. Use examples to illustrate your discussion if you wish,
but concentrate on concepts and principles. Briefly explain why you chose the phase selected. Your
brief explanation for your choice of phase should expand the earlier Part 1 demonstration of your
overall understanding of what the module is about. Build on your Parts 1 and 2 answers, avoiding
repetition of earlier discussion.
Purpose of the assessment essay
One obvious purpose is to provide a basis for assessing your performance in terms of achieving the
desired learning outcomes. The particular form of assessment being used is also intended to
encourage an effective approach to becoming familiar with the material the unit covers in a critical
manner. You may find it useful to imagine you are trying to explain to yourself or someone else
what the key learning points were in relation to your attendance at lectures, reading, and critically
assessing both, viewing the essay as a framework for consolidating your thinking. You may use a
case study context or other examples to illustrate points if you wish, but concentrate on key
generic issues and avoid discussing the details of a particular example or case study.

Nature of Assessment: This is a SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT. See ‘Weighting’ section above for the percentage that this
assignment counts towards your final module mark.
Word Limit: +/-10% either side of the word count (see above) is deemed to be acceptable. Any text that exceeds an
additional 10% will not attract any marks. The relevant word count includes items such as cover page, executive
summary, title page, table of contents, tables, figures, in-text citations and section headings, if used. The relevant word
count excludes your list of references and any appendices at the end of your coursework submission.
You should always include the word count (from Microsoft Word, not Turnitin), at the end of your coursework
submission, before your list of references.
