An innovation can be small, large, complex, orsimple. Innovations are not just technical achievements, but designs as well. The industry, style, and type of an innovation are all irrelevant; the impact is what determines its qualification.Innovation links to the growth and performance through the improvements in quality, productivity, efficiency, market share, and competitive positioning. It adds value by altering oldpractices and forms. Businesses that dont innovate may be demolished by the ones who do. Aninnovative product is a product that makes that leap into the benefits to costs quota in some areaof venture (What is innovation, n.d.).The iPhone is a great example of an innovative product. The iPhone is a multimedia andinternet enabled smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, Inc. The success of the phone iscentered on the flexible features it provides. The functionality and features of the device areenough to show superiority over all other smartphones, enough to attract user without the need ofadditional effort from promotions to boost the desire of the device. The main task is to make itscharacteristic known to the public and make the device available for customers withoutdisappointment, which has been a huge success in the past. The iPhone has innovative attributes that are notavailable with other smartphones. With every new iPhone launch more people want to have the device withthem, therefore the sale of the device is making history (The innovative product known as iPhone, 2011).The device was introduced to the market by Steve Jobs, however it was nearly six monthslater before the device was available to the public. The iPhone was known to be revolutionarywith an innovative design. It gained a burst of attention because it required very little hardware.AT&T became an exclusive distributor of the device. The approach used in introducing it wasintrapreneurship. Since Steve Jobs used AT&T to introduce the device, he was behaving like anentrepreneur, but with a larger business (Fidlin, 2011).One of the big disadvantages of releasing the iPhone with AT&T is that many customerswould have to switch their current mobile subscription to AT&T in order to get an iPhone. Thiscould cause them to obtain early termination fees with their current carrier, deposit fees withAT&T, and possibly higher monthly rates. The customers already with AT&T wouldnt have aproblem getting the phone, other than a possible increase in monthly charges.Apple faced many challenges when trying to bring the device to the market. They had toobtain operating permits from the FCC, patents on all their software, and the short battery life. With new each release, a new issue arises with problems with the phone. With the first iPhonethere was the problem with the proximity sensor on the phone not being good enough, resultingin dropped calls. Not to mention the strain on the battery life on the phones wouldnt supportmany of the features available. The third generation iPhone had a plastic back which resulted inoverheating and melting. The icons would often show the wrong applications or disappear. Andwith the iPhone 4 when people hold the phone their hand covers the antenna resulting in droppedcalls, as well as the volume rocker not working correctly. As with any device there are going tobe problem when its introduced to the market. Its up to Apple to correct these problems andmake the customer happy and keep coming back for the next generation (Problems with iPhone,2010).Fidlin, D. (2011). The history of the iPhone.
