· According to the Ghost, Claudius has murdered his brother, ascended the throne, and married the queen. Now his father’s ghost demands vengeance, and Hamlet says, in line 35, “May sweep to my revenge.” As a member of the audience you should ask yourself, why can’t Hamlet just march into the castle and accuse Claudius of murder? The answer to that question reveals why Hamlet spends the rest of the play “avenging.”
