Kim Anderson (2012) discussed a multitude of characteristics or concepts that, when applied to the education system will lead to an increase in student success. One of the concepts discussed heavily in Principal Anderson’s message was that when teachers and leaders within the school system come together as a professional learning community they are taking steps to ensure that all students are being given support no matter the circumstances. By having a professional learning community established in the school, faculty members are able to share accountability and make sure that the collective goal of leadership and supervision within education is student success and achievement. This includes collaboration among teachers and experts in order to implement the best practices for student success based on data and observation from fellow teachers and educational professionals and moving away from the “my” student and “your” student mentality. As they say, there is no “i” in team.
Based on this acknowledgement, as an administrator or supervisor in the school system I would develop a learning community that was founded in strong relationships within our team. Relationships not only between the teachers and the students in their classroom or teachers and parents, but also between educators, leaders, and other staff members. Anderson (2012) discussed the importance of safety and trust being key characteristics in the relationships and how, by incorporating these traits, it leads to an inclusive, supportive, and encouraging environments that promotes student-centered learning. Teachers and other administrators coming together and helping each other will provide the tools for students from various educational and socioeconomic backgrounds to have the opportunity to succeed in their educational endeavors. It is important that we change the basic perception of teaching into the understanding that the process of learning has changed and we need to adapt our original approach in order to accommodate our students’ diverse set of needs. In Proverbs 27:17 (New International Version) it states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” As leaders in education, we must realize that we can help one another in order to make great progress towards a student focus in education.
