We will look at how the principles of practices of journalism engage with features of social media communication — specifically questions of trust, spreadability, and social capital — so discuss what works and what is less successful. Part A — Impacts of Social Media Communication on Journalism In this first section, we’ll look at the current media environment and impact on journalism as a profession and as a public conversation. Read/Listen 1. Start by watching a short video that highlights both optimistic and cautionary issues facing journalism through social media communication environment: ‘How the 21st Century Changed Journalism.’ This video is from the perspective of a digital journalist, privileging opportunities for citizen journalism in a digital media environment as part of the conversation. 2. Now read Chapter 3 of your textbook on Social Media and Journalism. 3. Finally, listen to my Podcast A — Impacts of social media communication on Journalism. There are slides to follow if you like. Engage. For you, to help you learn. Not for submission. As you’re reading and watching this week, reflect on your own engagement with news production and consumption. We’ve already spoken a bit about trust, but I’d like you to really think about the news you have access to each day — Do you trust it? Do you seek it out or does it find you? Do you pay for it? Do you think you have the information you need to make informed decisions about what’s happening in your community? Part B — Re-Evaluating how we value Journalism In this second section, we’ll explore some of the opportunities to take advantage of social media communication and overcome the limitations of it to preserve the public accountability function of journalism. Read/Listen 1. Start by watching this succinct summary of the situation — ‘The Journalism Crisis and how to Fix it’ 2. Now watch Lara Setrakian’s short 8 min video ‘3 Ways to fix a broken news industry.’ 3. Now, make some popcorn, and watch Tom Rosenstiel’s ‘Has Digital Technology made Journalism worse of better’ for 18 minutes. Rosenstiel is an establishment voice so I’m curious to hear your ideas on this. 2 4. Now listen to my Podcast B Re-Evaluating how we give value to journalism. You can follow along with the slides if you want. Engage. For you, to help you learn. Not for submission. Take some time to explore the web pages for the Groundtruth project, the Syria Deeply project (now suspended) and also our own local Sun Peaks News. Reflect on what you think might be some of the more valuable ways in which social media communication is contributing to our understanding and experience of news and journalism. And what emerging practices might be less valuable? Journal — Submit. This week for the Journal, I’d like you to have an opportunity to respond to what you’ve been watching. Select a single point of argument from Tom Rosenstiel’s talk and respond to it. Is it something you think is an important and valuable idea that has shown to be good in the 10 years since his talk? Or it is something that has made you annoyed and you disagree with? Explain why and use examples if you can. Write about 200-250 words. Congratulations! You’ve finished this week.
