After reading Chapter 7, p. 195-221, reflect on how missionaries took control of the new land and people they had encountered.  For example, what were some of the tactics used for control? How did the native people protect their ancient cultures and religions?  What were some of the attempts to blend the ancient cultures and the newer European religions and cultures?  How were men and women treated differently?  How were different cultures treated? What was the significance of the brown virgin?  How were the native gods and goddesses merged with Christian saints?
