From the reflection and evaluation, the leadership skills that I possess include the creativity and good decision-making skills. On the hand, the leadership styles that I adopt as a leader include the democratic and the transformational leadership styles. Based on the evaluation of my leadership feeling, my emotional intelligence characteristics include empathy, motivation, etc. Furthermore, the recommendations for improving my leadership development include adoption of other leadership styles and development of other effective skills, pursuing higher education to improve my leadership competencies, etc. 3 INTRODUCTION Leadership enhances working towards the achievement or attainment of a common goal. For this to be achieved, the leader should thus possess the necessary leadership knowledge and skills that enables him or her to effectively and successfully lead others towards the attainment of the common goal (Raducan, 2014). This management report, therefore, is reflecting on my own effectiveness as a leader and evaluating the various leadership aspects i.e., leadership skills and styles I and recommending on the initiatives for my own personal leadership development. DISCUSSIONS CRITICAL REFLECTION ON MY OWN EFFECTIVENESS AS A LEADER In reflecting on my own effectiveness as a leader, I adopted the Gibbs’ reflective model which provides the framework for assessment of experiences and allowing someone to learn and plan from those things that either went well and those that did not (Adeani et al., 2020). It covers various key stages which include description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, and conclusion. This is provided as follows; Description of the leadership experience In order to promote teamworking and collaboration among students during the last semester, our lecturer told the students to divide amongst themselves into various groups of a maximum of five members to undertake assignments. In my group of five members, I was lucky to be chosen as the group leader and I was tasked with ensuring that the objective of the group is achieved. We were assigned group-work assignment and as the leader, I decided to call a group meeting to deliberate on how to successfully undertake the assignment and achieve good grades as group members as well as to hear and discuss with the group members on how assignment work can be distributed. This idea was based on my democratic leadership style that entails involvement of others in decision making. However, during the meeting, we realized that the assignment was somehow complex and we didn’t know how to go handle it. But as a leader with creativity skills, I came up with the effective approaches on how the assignment tasks will be carried out. Thereafter, I delegated tasks to every group member and stipulated timelines on when they should be completed. Feelings – My Emotional Intelligence Characteristics As a leader, I felt to be in possession of diverse of various emotional characteristics. For instance, in terms of self-awareness, I understood and known my self very well in terms of my capabilities, leaderships skills, etc. This thus enabled me to lead my group successfully. I was also empathetic 4 to my group members as I understood and considered their feelings throughout my leadership period. I knew this when I received appreciation messages in my phone and in our WhatsApp group. This helped me in engaging with and leading them without any form of conflicts experienced. Furthermore, when I received maximum cooperation and collaboration from my group members, I felt quite motivated that I will lead them successfully towards achievement of a group objective. This was informed by my high level of motivation that I gained. Evaluation of my leadership experience Throughout the period as a leader, I can confidently say that many of things went on well and while some didn’t go well. One of the things that I can say that it worked well is the fact that I was capable of effectively delegating tasks to every group member which led to the production good and quality answers for all the assignment tasks assigned to every member. This thus demonstrated my efficiency as a leader in delegating tasks to group members in order for success to be achieved. The other thing that went on well is effective and informed decision making in the group. As a leader I considered the opinions and ideas of all the group members in making our group decision making. This contributed to success of our group in terms of collaboration. From this good leadership experience, it implies that I am an effective leader who adopts good leadership style i.e., the democratic leadership style to successfully work with others to achieve a common goal. Furthermore, handling of the assignment tasks also went on well. This is because as a leader, I came up with the approaches on how the assignment tasks will be handled to provide guidance to the group members when handling them. This yielded positive outcome as every team member produced quality work that earned us good marks and grades. This demonstrated my good and effective leadership skills such as the creativity and problem-solving skills which clearly indicated my effectiveness of a leader. However, what didn’t go so well is the effective implementation of the assignment plan as two group members did not submit their work within the stipulated timelines set in the plan because they were slow in undertaking the tasks. This shows that I failed as a leader effectively implement the assignment tasks’ timelines. Analysis of my leadership skills and style From the above leadership experience, it is clear and evident that I possess various leadership skills which every good leader should possess. For instance, I possess good decision-making skills as I 5 was able to make quick and informed decisions that led to success of the group in attaining its objective. The other leadership skill that I possess is creativity skill evidenced when I came up with an approach on how to carry out our group assignments. I realized these skills when my team members alluded that I was creative and good in making decisions during the group meetings. On the other hand, the leadership styles that I adopted are the democratic and transformational leadership styles. Democratic leadership style is an approach in which the group members take part in the process of decision-making. In this regard, therefore, I always invited my group members for their opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. which I incorporated in the group’s decision making. Moreover, transformational leadership is a leadership approach which guides and takes opinions of others to initiate effective and positive changes for the common good (Tabassi et al., 2017). Based on the adoption of this approach, I was able to emphasise on open communication as well as cooperation in opinion and idea sharing which led to effective decision making. Summary of the findings as well as the overall strengths and weakness of my leadership style/effectiveness From the above reflection, it is notable that as a leader, I possess the key leadership skills such as good decision making and creativity skills which are essential for any leader. I also adopted essential leadership styles such as the democratic and transformational leadership styles which enhanced success of my leadership. The strengths of these leadership styles are that it builds good working relationships, encourages high level of commitment among members, encourages learning, etc. However, their weaknesses are that it can result to procrastination, takes time to reach a consensus, disruption of routines in the case of transformational leadership, etc. CONCLUSION From this leadership experience, I can conclude that I am an effective leader who is capable of leading others successfully. This is based on my leadership skills and styles as well as my emotional characteristics identified and evaluated in this reflection. From the reflection, the future areas of leadership development that needs further improvement include adoption of other leadership styles to improve my leadership effectiveness, improvement of the leadership capabilities, etc. as shown in Appendix I below on my personal development plan. 6 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT The following recommendations for my own personal leadership development can be made based on above leadership reflection above; To ensure that I possess good leadership skills such as planning and implementation skills, I should continuously practice of developing and implementing plans. In this regard, therefore, I should develop my own plans and those of my group or organization and implementing them with the aim of making sure I have developed the necessary planning skills required in leadership. Apart from the transformational leadership approach that I adopted in the above context; I would adopt other leadership approaches in the future such as the situational approach as a different approach to leading others in a group. This is to improve my efficiency as a leader since an effective leader ought to be flexible and versatile in adopting different and appropriate leadership approaches depending on the situation or context in the future (Baesu and Bejinaru, 2014). In order to develop and improve my leadership capabilities, I will pursue a Masters’ Degree in Leadership and Management in one of the reputable and recognized higher learning institution. This pursuit of the higher learning on leadership will equip me with the necessary and essential theoretical knowledge that will be helpful in increasing my capacity to lead others towards the achievement or attainment of the common goal. Moreover, as an aspiring leader, I would seek leadership mentorship and coaching in the future in order to improve and develop my own leadership competencies. In this regard, therefore, I will seek guidance, support and directions from successful professional leaders such as company CEOs, managing directors, heads of government agencies, etc. with reputable leadership skills. This will thus help me in gaining insights on what skills should an effective leader has, the competencies they possess, etc. which will assist me in building my leadership capabilities, skills and competencies in the future which I can leverage on to achieve success in leadership (Page, 2020). Furthermore, I should undertake continuous own individual leadership assessment with the aim of identifying my leadership strengths and weaknesses. This assessment will thus help me in identifying the leadership strengths such as creativity and innovativeness that I will capitalize on in order to improve my leadership skills, capabilities and competencies and in identifying those 7 leadership weaknesses such as poor planning implementation that I can improve on to improve my effectiveness as a leader (Goker and Bozkus, 2017). Lastly, I recommend that I should participate in leadership trainings organized by corporates and government in seminars, workshops, etc. which is aimed at improving leadership skills among different leaders. I belief that these leadership trainings will equip me with the knowledge on how to acquire and utilize the key and necessary leadership skills such as the good communication, team working, persuasive, learning agility, etc. This as a result will enable me to acquire and possess these skills which helps in improving my ability to lead others towards meeting and or achieving a common purposeful goal. 8 References Adeani, I.S., et al.
