At this point in your academic journey, you have certainly heard a great deal about ethics. However, a great deal of the guidelines in our Code of Ethics can be hard to understand until you see how they apply to the work that you are going to do. Let’s start with basics. Did you know that NASW is always updating and revising our Code to ensure that it is still culturally relevant and up to date with the issues of today? Did you also know that they have experts on hand to help you  navigate ethical dilemmas? In addition to these formal resources, always remember that your supervisor is your first line of defense when dealing with an ethical dilemma.

The National Association of Social Workers’ (NASW) Office of the Ethics and Professional Review offers consultations to NASW members on issues related to ethics. Thus, individuals enjoy ethics consultations as a free-to-access resource owing to their NASW membership. These consultations are designed to enable members to navigate through the various ethical dilemmas or ethical questions they encounter in their everyday practice. There are several things I could expect if I were to call the Ethics Consultation Line. First, I could expect to be provided with consultation services to enable me to better understand the applicable standards in the Code in addition to the other resources and pertinent considerations that I require to make a well-informed decision or solution to my ethical dilemma. I will not be expecting the consultants to offer definitive solutions for my situation; neither will be expecting the consultants to decide for me. Instead, I would only expect to be guided in a way to helps me make an ethical and reasoned decision. According to the NASW website, the consultation services are only collegial and, as such, are not and should not be mistaken for a clinical, medical, or legal opinion (NASW, 2024). The resources and references that the consultants may offer to me are only intended to help me explore my ethical dilemma using the ethical dilemma methodology.
However, in case the consultant feels that the resources are not adequate to adequately address my dilemma, I could expect him/her to guide me on how to seek additional consultation services from various clinical, legal, and/or ethical sources. Secondly, I could expect confidentiality. I understand that the consultants ask questions about a caller’s personal information such as name and contact number. While I do not know whether or not NASW records can be subpoenaed, I could expect that the log will not contain any identifying information besides my call log number. Lastly, I understand that the Ethics Consultation Line is often very busy and, as a consequence, my call may not be answered immediately. According to
