Mini-Debate Script Name: Resolution: It is beneficial to learn a second language. Side: Affirmative Introduction: Attention: We live in a world where the necessity to know more than one language is becoming more and more relevant. For example, we can think about the United States, a country made up of different ethnical groups who speak different languages, particularly, if we consider Spanish. El Nasser, a demographic reporter, on USA TODAY of February 12th, 2008, stated that “Hispanics will triple and reach the 29% of the total population in this country.” Credibility: I am trilingual in Italian, English and Spanish, and I have personally experienced the advantages of learning a new language. Preview: Today, I will affirm the resolution: it is beneficial to learn a second language. I will tell you why learning a second language is very important and beneficial for each one of us, and I will defend my argument by providing three reasons. First, it is an active learning experience. Second, it enables people to move from their comfort zone and connect with others. Third, it can play a crucial role in landing tremendous career opportunities. Body: Learning a second language is not an easy task, but it positively affects our knowledge and our personal view of the world. I. First, it is a good workout for our brain and directly helps the cognitive process. Anne Merritt, an English foreign language lecturer in South Korea, wrote on the Telegraph on June 19th of this year that learning a second language “improves the functionality of your brain by challenging it to recognize, negotiate meaning, and communicate in different language systems.” I can still remember when I went through this process four years ago. Now I am capable of switching between three different languages and adapting them depending on the situation. Transition: Now that I have talked about the active learning experience of learning a second language, I will explain how it can also help you to connect with people from different nationalities) II. When we learn a second language, we truly enter a new dimension and critically reflect about the world around us. Not only we start thinking in a different way, but we also have the opportunity to communicate with people from different counties. For instance, knowing English and Spanish allowed me to get engaged in the community by volunteering in different places and always meeting new people. This opportunity also helped me to easily make friends with people from all over the world: Germany, Spain, China, Mexico and Colombia. Transition: I have explained how learning a second language can help you to connect with people from different countries. Now I will talk about the benefits you can get in your career. III. Today, the job market is very competitive, and every skill can certainly make the difference in the choice of a future candidate rather than another. Thus, a second language can become a potential asset when we apply for job. I am currently working as a summer sales and marketing intern for a small firm in town. When I applied for the position, the description entailed: good communication skills, effective organizational skills, and being fluent in Spanish. Guess what was the relevant factor that allowed me to get the internship? Knowing Spanish. Conclusion: Sign post and Summary: In conclusion, today I have affirmed the resolution: it is beneficial to learn a second language. We explored three reasons why: it is an active learning experience; therefore, it improves your cognitive skills. Moreover, it allows you to communicate with people from different countries. Lastly, it can increase career opportunities. Learning a second language is good for our knowledge and provides us the right tools to succeed as members of a global community.
