Part 1 Chapter 7 is one of my favorite chapters of the entire book. I could do an entire semester class on just this chapter alone, especially in this COVID 19 world we live in!!!!. I call it the carbon monoxide of communications….IT’S THE SILENT KILLER! There is so much in this chapter but I think where I want to go with this is the Types of Nonverbal Communications. From page 225 to 239 the book goes over SEVEN Types of Nonverbal Communications….Body Movement, Voice, Touch, Appearance, Physical Space, Physical Environment and Time. As I have been asking you to do in almost every chapter, I want you to pick concepts that resonate with you. Of the seven I want you to select FOUR that you can expound upon with examples. For example I can relate to the Physical Space so much. Now you see signage in all stores to keep 6 feet of distance. Why? To limit people from getting into each others personal & intimate space talked about on page 237. Before this whole pandemic I can remember places like Target during the holiday season and people were all up on me in the checkout lane. So close that they could possibly see my credit card information!!! All up in my personal space! Conversely I can recall many times at sporting events when I was seated next to someone I didn’t know and when the home team did something good I would see complete strangers high five each other and even hug one another!! Proxemics, the study of the way people and animals use space definitely intrigues me!! If I was doing this assignment the other three I would expound upon would be Appearance, Touch and Body Movement. Again you are to pick FOUR of the seven and expound on why those resonate with you. On pages 251 to 253 the book talks about SEVEN types of Ineffective Listening (Pseudolistening, StageHogging, Selective Listening, Insulated Listening, Defensive Listening Ambushing and Insensitive Listening). Give me an example when you found yourself doing one of the 7. Describe in detail and what was the outcome of your Ineffective Listening. That is the first paragraph. The 2nd paragraph is that on pages 253 to 255 the book lists NINE reasons we don’t listen better. (Message Overload, Preoccupation, Rapid Thought, Effort, External Noise, Faulty Assumptions, Lack of Apparent Advantages, Lack of Training, Hearing Problems). Which one of the 9 is the #1 reason why you personally don’t listen better and why. I want examples of how this reason has played out in your life.
