I wonder in thinking along with that as Kelly Gates raised in her lecture, what happens when citizens try to limit their surveillance? Surname 1 Week5 Surveillance Society Contemporary society is based on the ubiquity of surveillance technology, especially via digital media. Members of society act as the fuel to propel the surveillance capitalism which benefits a few corporations at the expense of our privacy. Gates Kelly and Shoshana Zuboff agree that we are indeed living in a surveillance society. Kelly is an associate professor of communication and science at UCSD while Zuboff is a scholar and accomplished author on the age of machines. Both authors are informed in their analysis of the surveillance society. On the one hand, Kelly focuses on the biometric future as a developing technology that will dominate society in future and hence compromising our privacy (25). On the other hand, Zuboff recognizes that surveillance technology has already taken away our privacy and sees no need of referring to the surveillance society in future tense. I agree with Zuboff’s approach as an informed analysis of current technology and how it has taken away our privacy We are living in a surveillance society and as Zuboff observes, ‘we thought that we search Google, but now we understand that Google searches us’ (par. 6). The surveillance society is not limited to biometrics as discussed by Kelly but also includes all the information that corporations such as Facebook and Google retain from their consumers and use to their benefit.
