Essay writing tips: How to write an academic essay paper

During your academic life, you will be required to write an essay. As you go to higher classes, you may have to write more and more essay papers with more requirements. It is important to learn how to write an effective essay paper in order to get good marks in your academic papers. An essay is a written composition in which you express a specific idea, and then use facts, statements, analysis and explanations to support it. Usually the basic format of an essay contains 4-5 paragraphs, but an essay paper may contain many paragraphs as you need. However, the paper itself consists of three parts- Introduction, main text and conclusion.

Choose a topic

When you start writing an essay in school, it is not uncommon for you to be assigned a topic. However, as the grade level improves, you will have more and more opportunities to choose the topic of the essay. When choosing a topic for your essay paper, you need to make sure that your topic is compatible with the type of document you wish to write. If you wish to write a general description article, then general topics are sufficient. However, if you want to write a specific analysis, then your topic should be very specific.

If you need to choose your own topic, then the first step is to define the purpose of your article. Is it about education, about a person, place, thing, or idea? The topic you choose should support the purpose of your thesis. The purpose of your essay is determined by the type of document you write.

There are three basic types of papers.

Analytical essays

An analytical essay breaks down an idea or topic into its key components. It assesses the thought by introducing analysis of the segments to the reader.

Expository essays

It is also known as explanatory essays , Expository essays provide explanations of certain content.

Argumentative essays

These types of essays are also called persuasive. This type of essay puts forward a specific analytical claim on a problem, and then provides evidence and arguments to support the claim. The claims established in an argumentative (persuasive) essay can be opinions, reviews, evaluations, explanations, causal statements, or policy recommendations. The purpose of an argumentative essay is to persuade the reader that a claim is valid.

Once you have defined the purpose of your essay, the next step is to brainstorm. Instead of just choosing one topic from the beginning, take the time to consider, compare and weigh your options. List out all the different topics that fit the purpose of your paper. Once they are all written on paper, first eliminate topics that are difficult or not related to other topics. In addition, get rid of topics that are too challenging or that are of little interest to you. Soon, you will narrow the list to a few topics, and then you can make a final decision.

Use diagrams or outlines to organize your ideas

Some students may hesitate to start writing essays on their own. They want to make sure that before writing anything, they have organized all their thoughts in their heads. Creating a diagram or outline allows you to put a pencil on paper and start organizing your ideas. Don’t worry or worry about organization at this time, just create a properly organized format for your information. If you use diagrams or outlines, it doesn’t matter. Some people prefer the flow structure of the chart and it works best. Others like the strict and logical structure of the model. Don’t worry, once you start, if the format you choose does not suit you, you can change the format at any time.

Diagrams

The following are useful steps for drawing diagrams to organize your essay ideas.

First draw a circle in the middle of a piece of paper large enough to write on. Inside the circle, write the topic of your essay. Now draw three or four lines. Outside of your circle. At the end of each line, draw another circle slightly smaller than the circle in the middle of the page. In each of the smaller circles, write down the main idea about your topic, or the main points you want to highlight. If it is a persuasive (argumentative) essay, please write your argument. If the purpose of the article is to explain a process (description), please write a step in each circle. If your article is intended to be informative or explanatory (analytic), please write down the main categories into which the information can be divided. Now draw three more lines from each circle that contains the main idea. At the end of each line, draw another line. Circles Finally, in each circle, write facts or information that will help support the main point of view.

Outline

The following are useful steps to develop an outline to organize your essay ideas. Take a paper and write your subject on it. Now, under the topic on the left side of the paper, write the Roman numerals I, II, and III in sequence. Next to each Roman numeral, write down key points or thoughts about the topic of the article. If this is a persuasive article, please write down your argument. If it is a report article, write down the main categories that the information will be divided into. If the purpose of your article is to explain a process, please write down each step of the process. Then, under each Roman numeral, write A, B, and C on the left side of the page. Finally, next to each letter, under each Roman numeral, write information and/or facts that support the main point or idea. Formulate the thesis statement Once you have an understanding of the basic structure of the thesis and the information you will present in the thesis, it is time to formulate the thesis statement. The thesis statement states or describes what you intend to show in the thesis. A good essay statement should be clear, concise, specific and positioned.

The thesis statement tells the reader what the essay paper is about, and what point they will make. If you have selected a thesis topic and developed an outline or diagram, you can now decide which ideas you want to convey through the essay. The thesis statement has two key components. The first part is the topic, and the second part is the main points of the essay paper .

Once you have completed the thesis statement supporting the type of thesis you are writing and the purpose of the thesis, you can begin the introduction.

Introduction

The introduction is the first paragraph of your essay. Introduce readers to the ideas that this essay paper will address. It also aims to attract the attention and interest of readers. The first sentence of the introductory paragraph should be as engaging as possible. The following sentence should clarify your opening statement. End the introductory paragraph with your thesis statement.

Body

The body of the article or essay is where you explain, describe, or argue about the topic you choose. Every major idea you include in the outline or diagram will become part of the body paragraph. If you write down four main ideas in an outline or diagram, you will have four body paragraphs.

Each paragraph will elaborate a main idea that supports the thesis statement. The first paragraph of the text should present your strongest argument to support your thesis. Start the paragraph with a supporting idea. Then continue to add other sentences that contain supporting information, facts, evidence, or examples, as shown in the diagram or outline. The last sentence should summarize what you discussed in the paragraph. The second body paragraph will follow the same format as the first body paragraph. This paragraph should present your second most powerful argument to support your thesis statement. In addition, as with the first and second paragraphs, the third and fourth paragraphs will contain the third and fourth strongest arguments to support your thesis statement. Likewise, the last sentence of the third and fourth paragraphs should summarize what you discussed in each paragraph and show the reader that the paragraph contains the final supporting argument.

Conclusion

The last paragraph of your essay gives the conclusion. This paragraph should restate your thesis statement with a slightly different wording from the wording used in the introduction. This paragraph should summarize the arguments made in the body of the essay. The last sentence of the last paragraph should convey that your essay is over. Your last paragraph should convey to the reader that you believe you have tested the ideas stated in the thesis statement.
