A World of Differences

In “A World of Differences,” we see people talking about embarrassing situations they experienced because they did not understand the rules of the culture they were visiting. Sometimes, the embarrassment is minor, as a visiting scholar learns when she stands on a restaurant chair to place a parcel on a shelf. In others, the embarrassment verges on danger, as a young American woman learns when she wears shorts in public in a rural Hindu village. All cultures have established rules governing a wide variety of contexts. These rules often run so deep that they become unquestioned assumptions.
