 Vertebrates have an internal skeleton which includes spine made up of vertebrae. The spine protects the dorsal nerve cord (spinal cord) which leads to the brain. The chordate phylum has three sub-phyla which include vertebrates. Every other phylum except for the chordate are composed of invertebrates without spines.
