Chapter 14: Map Projections

We’re going to do something a little different this week.

First watch this video on tiling the plane. What shapes can be used to tile a flat surface?

Next, watch this video on tiling a sphere. What shapes can be used to tile the sphere? How are polygons different on the sphere than they are on the plane?

Now take an orange. Draw some continents on it. Now peel the orange and try to lay the peel flat. What happened?

Finally watch this video. How does this video relate to what we’ve done so far?

For your write-up this week, you should answer all the questions in this document. Also be sure to include a picture of your orange peel.
