ULSB Assessment Brief MN3127 Political Economy of Brexit

ULSB Assessment Brief MN3127 Political Economy of Brexit

In this assignment, you are required to write a 3000-word essay on a topic of your
choice drawing upon theories and materials discussed in the module MN3127. You
have the choice to adopt an empirical (focused on an example) or a conceptual
approach (focusing on a concept).
Advice and Guidance
For an empirical approach:
Please discuss the implications of Brexit for an organisation of your choice. When
discussing Brexit consequences for this organisation, break the uncertainty of the
future status down to possible economic contexts and scenarios of a Brexit world as
discussed in the module. Consider the importance of factors such as labour
migration, market access and trade.
 Remember that organisations are broadly defined and include not only
businesses but also (for example), non-governmental organisations, charities
(for example: the university), governments, and supra-national bodies such as
the EU or the EFTA.
 You may look at a local organisation in Leicester, a company you know or
have already some experience with.
If you choose an empirical approach your essay should include:
 a detailed description of your organisation and problem of focus. What do
they do, how, users and stakeholders? Describe their exposure to Brexit.
 a critical analysis of its Brexit implications using the scenarios discussed
in the module completed with your own private study and reading of academic
literature (e.g. you could pick an organisation, look at their workforce and
consider the implications of limited labour migration from the EU). Using the
scenarios we discussed, try to evaluate how different Brexit outcomes will
affect the organisation.
 You can also include relevant information from the press (but remember this
does not replace the appropriate use of academic literature).
For a theoretical approach:
Choose one of the dominant political-economic ideas underlying the Brexit debate as
presented in the module and use the essay to expand your knowledge on it. For
instance, you could explicate and analyse the ideas of free market Brexit advocates
or comparatively analyse the ideas of new economic nationalism or neoliberalism.
You can also choose political economic ideas relevant to Brexit that have not been
discussed in the module (but please let the module leader know if you do).
If you choose a theoretical approach your essay should include:
 a detailed presentation of the concept or theory you are focusing on
 critical analysis using materials from the module completed with your own
private study and reading of academic literature.
 If relevant have your discussion include one or two organisational examples
(obviously presented with less detail than if your essay takes an empirical
approach) to illustrate the theory and evaluate its relevance.
Whether you prefer to work on an empirical or conceptual approach I
recommend that you choose your examples from a sector you are interested in or
have some knowledge of (whether this is agriculture, banking, tourism, non-profit
sector, public sector). It is better to choose examples on which there is abundant
information – a website explaining how an organisation, a project, or object came to
be, press articles, reports or interviews with company leaders. You can choose
examples mentioned during lectures, but you obviously need to go further in your
research than the information that has been already discussed in class or is available
in set readings.
