The endocrine system has yin/yang relationships with its hormones. Homeostasis is achieved through feedback mechanisms which allows for careful adjustment of the amount of hormone to keep things balanced. If you take Medical Terminology (which is a helpful course for all students) you will learn that hypo is a prefix which means low and hyper is a prefix which means above/high, and, of course, here it is speaking to the amount of the hormone. Disease states occur when the amount of a hormone is too high or too low. For example, the blood glucose medical term is glycem ia is a condition, so putting them all together creates the word hyperglycemia which, you got it, means too much sugar in the blood. The common name for this is diabetes. People can also suffer from hypoglycemia which means too little sugar in the blood. For this assignment you will choose five of the hormones you have been learning about.
· Produce a chart that contrasts the diseases caused by too much and too little of each of the five hormones.
Include the following aspects in the assignment:
· A column for the name of the hormone
· A column for the common disease name for the too much (hyper) and too little (hypo) amount of the hormone (hint: Addisons, Cushings, hyperaldosteronism, acromegaly, hypothyroidism)
· A column to briefly describe what happens with each
· A column for treatments (hint: we can often give man-made synthetic [exogenous] versions of the hormone, but what about the excess amount diseases?)
You do not need a reference or a cover page for your chart, but all college work should always contain your name, the name of the assignment, and be written with proper grammar. Do add a citation for your text and any outside reference you may use.
