Style Exercise: Voice
The de.copia exercise is useful showing how stylethe third canon of rhetoric (invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery)has a major impact on ones writing. Paragraphs and essays that feature combined and varied sentences often shine the most.
Choose any two of the Model narratives linked on Blackboard and write a brief analysis/comparison for the Discussion Board. I suggest three paragraphs-one for each essay and then one tying the two together in some way. Be as detailed as possible. Consider the style each is written in (the tone of the authorial voice). What are the ways in which each narrative is successful? Why do they interest the reader? What can (or should) a reader learn from reading them? Are there any ways in which they do not succeed or achieve their purpose? Be specific and scholarly (don’t give “like or dislike” types of responses). *»
