As we know, body shaming is ‘The action or practice of expressing humiliation about another individual’s body shape or size’ Body shaming has been a colossal topic discussed by society and the media. The media offers tips like ‘lose weight instantly’ without knowing our bodies, especially our appearance. People should not look up to how the media portrays a gorgeous body because it can affect a victim who is not confident in the way they physically appear. It is essential to inform the public how our bodies function differently. Firstly, body shaming is present in many ways. People often compare our appearance to another person and then criticize it. (i.e., ‘I’m so ugly.’ ‘Nobody will ever love me because my body is not as perfect as someone’.’) People go to extreme measures to achieve the ideal body image. Issues related to body image include weight-lifting to build muscles, dieting to remain slim and eating disorders. Most people spent a chunk of time on social media sites to check on photos of our friends. We then wish to be slimmer and prettier like they see others. Moreover, people criticize how others look. Overweight people face body shaming almost every day. They are told how they don’t watch what they eat and lack self-discipline. People criticize how others look without their knowledge. Sadly, we do not celebrate female athletes for their strength and power; instead, we deem them masculine. We tell people they will not find lovers if they do not lose weight. Others say they cannot date a person because they are shorter than them. So why do we body shame ourselves and others? The main reason is that the ideal body image is imprinted in our minds by society and the media. Most TV and movie stars are thin and the ones who do not tend to be the jokes on screen. Video games and comic books emphasize women’s bodies and draw female characters of impractical body shapes. Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers is portrayed as not attractive to women and too weak for the army before receiving the super-soldier serum, showing how ridiculous this is making us hate our bodies and try to modify our bodies by having a Brazilian butt lifting to look like cartoon characters and Instagram models. So what’s the negative effects of body shaming on our general health? Body shaming is said to amplify eating disorders in individuals. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, it is estimated that 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically eating disorder in their lifetimes. Body-shaming also takes a toll on our mental health. Research by the Center for Advancing Health showed that most teenagers who believed they were overweight were likely to suffer depression. A person who has experienced long periods of body shaming tends to pity themselves, causing a lack of confidence. They isolate themselves because they see themselves as unworthy of happiness and respect. In the end, how do we overcome body shaming? Firstly, we should start by loving ourselves. Self-love and acceptance are essential for our overall well-being. Ignore those negative comments on social media platforms and from people. Our body image does not define who we are as a person. Stop allowing the media and TV shows to influence how you feel about your own body. You , are the only person who knows how your body functions. Let no one bring you down about how you look.
