Leaflet and 1500 word report (50% of overall module mark)
The coursework requires you to design a leaflet to communicate health information in a manner that is accessible to the general public and based on research evidence, as detailed in the accompanying individual report. The topic of the leaflet should be agreed with your seminar leader in advance (by 20th Feb when we have a Q & A) and the content should not replicate the subject area of any other assessments.
Formative feedback will be provided by peers during a seminar session (5th March) where, working in small groups, you will present and verbally justify the rationale for your draft leaflet.
Leaflet (30%)
The leaflet should be 1 sheet of A4 only (this can be folded). You must also submit a hard copy to your seminar leader. Use appropriate colour and pictures in your design. Supportive material on how to design health information can be found on Blackboard (in Assessment).
Consider the following in your design:
• Content: is the aim of the leaflet clear and the content appropriate for chosen audience?
• Word choice & style: use active voice and common, everyday language. See readability document on how to make text accessible.
• Organisation: material should be presented in logical sequence – use headings and ‘chunking’ of information.
• Design: use illustrations and colour to reinforce rather than distract from leaflet content. Consider bullets, boxes, larger font, highlighting etc to draw attention to key points.
• Actionability: clearly identify any actions that the user should take.
Report (70%)
The accompanying report must use published sources to support your rationale for the leaflet, its content and your approach to design. You can use sub-headings to structure your report. The report should include:
• A summary of the report, similar to an abstract (200 words)
• Rationale for leaflet: use evidence to explain the purpose and need for the leaflet.
• Outline of the target audience and how the leaflet specifically addresses this group.
• Content of leaflet:
• indicate how you have used health psychology theory/best practice guidelines/evidence to develop the content of your leaflet.
• indicate how you selected and prioritised information to include, and how you determined your key action for your audience.
• Design considerations in the presentation and content of the leaflet. Refer to leaflet resource guidelines on BB.
• Reference section (not included in word count) which includes all citations from report.
A reminder of the assessment criteria (see module outline):
1. Clarity and accessibility of the health information leaflet to the target audience.
2. Evidence of ability to support and justify content of leaflet with theoretical and/or research evidence.
3. Depth and breadth of knowledge in understanding health communication area.
