6.1. Essay or marketing strategy
The written element of the assessment consists of a 3,500 word essay or evidenced
business plan.
You can choose one out of the four titles. All students will be encouraged to consider
your own essay/report question, where possible.
The deadline for the written assessment is Saturday 28th March 2018.
Choose one of the following titles:
ONE
Negotiate an essay or project title with your tutor.
(This essay should address a connection between theory and practice, or an
intercultural context).
TWO
Critically evaluate the extent to which intercultural communication theory can
inform intercultural competence in practice.
THREE
Considering intercultural theory, critically evaluate the limitations of cross-cultural
theory.
FOUR
How can cross-cultural theory help adaptation for an intercultural
negotiation/meeting? Critically evaluate the extent to which theory can help a
professional to adapt to the intercultural context of a negotiation/meeting.
– Although not required, you are encouraged to identify the context of a
negotiation/meeting by yourself. However, you are alternatively welcome to use

the Accurtech example found in the assessment folder on Blackboard (Appendix
One).
1. Describe the relevant context
2. Assess the layers and aspects of culture that may cause difficulties, with
reference to theory
3. Apply cross-cultural theory to the scenario to make recommendations on how a
professional might adapt to planning a meeting and negotiating in the business
context.
4. Justify the recommendations made with reference to theory
5. Critically appraise any potential difficulties or gaps in the theory from a practical
perspective.
FIVE
Present a marketing strategy for a company or enterprise with which you are
familiar. This strategy must address an intercultural context*.
* This could be a company: promoting itself to multi-cultural customers, or promoting
diversity amongst intercultural staff, or a company expanding to another country, or
outsourcing to a company overseas, etc.
6.2 Assessment procedure
The written element of the assignments should be submitted to TurnItIn on
blackboard.

Penalties for Late or Non Submission
Late Submission
For unauthorised late submission the following applies:
50% cap for work submitted up to 7 actual days after the original
submission date.
0% for work submitted more than 7 actual days after the original
submission date.

Non Submission
A student who fails to submit work for assessment or attend examinations shall
be deemed to have failed the assessments concerned.
