Social Comparison Social comparison is brought up through the aspect of self-concept. This term can be described as who individuals think they are, i.e., self-identity (Smith et al., 2021, p. 23). According to the lecture pages, self-concept is how individuals see themselves, i.e., selfpicture. Therefore, individuals considering how they equate themselves to others is what is commonly referred to as social comparison (Smith et al., 2021, p. 26). Many individuals tend to judge themselves via others based on social customs. In the film, social comparison is witnessed through the protagonist, who is on the plane with his family and has a conversation with his son. He pretends not to fear being sucked out of the plane mid-flight because he is socially conscious of what his son would think of him. Thus, he sees himself as not afraid of planes to fit in with his son. Another social comparison is when Peter Pan’s family arrives in England. They consider how they equate themselves to others when the protagonist claims that the children should remember they are in England, a land of Good Manners. Influence on Identity Based on the whole idea of self-concept, according to the lecture pages, identity can be influenced by various factors, including sex and gender, ethnicity, and culture. On gender, both males and females are expected to act differently, influencing identity. Cultural influences influence self-concept since it shapes individuals thinking and conduct (Smith et al., 2021, p. 28). In the film, the protagonist’s influence on identity is witnessed whereby a culture of work and success influences his real identity. He misses important days for his children, like the Baseball game based on work circumstances. His desire to be a successful lawyer overshadows his wish to be present for the family. He also loses his young spirit and exploratory personality, his true identity. Self-fulfilling Prophecy This concept entails forecasting a particular thing to be true about oneself and acting in ways that will eventually make the prediction real (Smith et al., 2021, p. 33). According to the lecture pages, the prophecies can either be self or other imposed. The protagonist also brings about the self-fulfilling prophecy in the film Hook. However, in this scenario, the prophecy is positive. In the scene where Peter and the lost boys are having a meal, the meal is invisible to him. Still, through self-imposed prophecy, he sees the food and later regains his identity as Peter Pan, making him fly and conquer his nemesis, Captain Hook. References Smith, T.
