Essay
This essay should be a research paper of at least four full pages in length (not including the Works Cited page). The essay must stay focused on the primary source(s) (the text or texts you’re writing about). You may choose to use other secondary sources (but you don’t have to). The essay must also include a Works Cited Page. Use MLA format. Use quotes from the literature to support your thesis.
The essay MUST be submitted as a Word document. Essays submitted any other way will not be graded and will receive a zero.
Some things to check for when revising your paper:
Make sure you have a clear thesis statement in the introduction. The thesis must clearly state the main argument of the essay. If I get to the end of your introduction paragraph and don t know what the main argument of the essay is, you have failed to provide me with a thesis. The question in the essay prompt that is in bold is the one your thesis should answer.
Eliminate background information about the author. You could have a sentence or two of background information in your intro (if it’s interesting and pulls the reader into the essay), but you don’t need background information about the author in the body of the essay. Keep the body of the essay focused on commentary that supports your thesis.
Make sure your essay has an original title (not just “Paper One” or the name of the text you’re writing about).
When writing about literature, assume the reader of the essay has read the text. This means you don’t need to use any summary.
Make sure your paper uses Times New Roman, size 12 font, double spaced. Don’t put spaces between paragraphs, and don’t add spaces between the title of the essay and the beginning of the essay.
Option One
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel. Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and Olaudah Equiano’s Narrative of his Life both focus on the issue of slavery, and both authors attempt to persuade the reader to understand the horrible realities associated with slavery. Which author is more successful in convincing readers that slavery is immoral? Compare and contrast the two texts in order to decide which one has more of an impact on the reader.
Option Two
Henry David Thoreau is perhaps best known to modem readers for his book, Walden. Many readers have been inspired by his ideas on simplicity, humanity’s relationship to nature, fashion, materialism, division of labor, frugality, solitude, etc. Do you believe that Thoreau’s lifestyle is morally superior to the way other people live? Are Thoreau’s ideologies applicable to a modem audience, or is the lifestyle he proposes impossible to achieve in a technology-driven society?
Option Three
Langston Hughes and Martin Luther King Jr. both used their words (through writing and speeches) to fight for racial equality in America. How far have we come today, in terms of racial equality in this country? You can choose to focus on cither Langston Hughes’ poetry, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech,” or both. Look at the issues with racial inequality that King and/or Hughes wrote about, and compare those with the issues of today. You might want to compare some of the people who are currently fighting for racial equality with the writings of Hughes and King.
