THE QUESTION:
This week, we have been discussing the idea that a playwright creates a framework or blueprint that will be used by other theatre artists to create a finished performance. Please do a Google video search on one of the following plays: The Crucible, Macbeth, Of Mice and Men, The Boys Next Door, Death of a Salesman, A Streetcar Named Desire, or Our Town. Look at three (or more) clips from different productions of the play on which you have performed your search (Note: just pick ONE of these plays) Although there will be film versions of some of the suggested plays, try to find stage performances. Based on what you saw in the clips you viewed, do you agree or disagree with the assertion that the playwright creates a blueprint for a finished product (the play in performance)? Please tell us what play you researched and what differences you noticed in the different productions. Do your observations support or undermine the notion of the playwright as blueprint creator? Give at least two specific examples to support your decision.
