Impacts of Nostalgia
1. In various settings, nostalgia has been linked to higher hedonic welfare, such as life
satisfaction and happiness. Additionally, nostalgia enhances eudaimonic well-being and
favorable connections. (Hepper & Dennis, 2023). It also reduces risks to eudaimonic
well-being.
2. Nostalgia has ramifications for the future. Experiments using artificial nostalgia have
improved optimism through social connection, self-esteem, and a sense of being accepted
and valued (Cheung et al., 2016). However, these effects are exclusive to people who
exhibit strong trait nostalgia. For instance, more optimism was indirectly linked to those
more likely to experience nostalgia-induced nostalgia through higher self-esteem and
social connectivity.
3. Nostalgia offers social, existential, and self-oriented advantages. The results of examining
the existential, social, and self-oriented consequences of nostalgia alone and in
combination supported this conclusion (Frankenbach et al., 2021). People who are both
high and low on the neuroticism scale are likely to gain psychologically from nostalgic
thinking.
