Introduction

Diversity is the recognition of our differences and understanding that people are unique. It encompasses respect and acceptance.

Diversity comes in when we consider the development of our modern society. Canada is successful because diversity is their greatest strength, they allow immigrants to settle in comfortably and even be an aid to building the country socially, economically and even politically.

In relation to the article and social issues the following are part of the study done to show how diversity is a driving force to development in the society:

There is the global economics and management that is engineered by the cultural, political and social forces.

Inclusion and diversity and are the right things to do to promote equal opportunities everyone for the progress of the nation. Just like Canada are doing it.

It’s good for business administration. Companies have embraced diversity and they end up gaining high market shares and pose a competitive edge to upcoming industries.

Like Canada diversity has helped them come up with nothing but success. They are a clear definition of unity. Citizens do not discriminate and are more supportive. This has helped them promote their culture, social lives and the living standards of the nation.

Productivity has also been brought out in the article. People from all over the world coming together means there will new ideas, innovations, different approaches of handling problems and more growth and development. Thus, diversity is good news to a nation.

Diversity has brought about universal citizenship. One gets to meet new people, culture, and tradition and practices different from theirs. You also get to learn new skills and languages worldwide.

Diversity brings about the concept of having new perspectives. It helps you view things differently due to the struggles and priorities thus resulting to positive change of mind set.

Diversity is beauty! The idea of togetherness is just intriguing. It reigns over violence and plus it is a source of inspiration to advance more in life.

Theory

Social phenomena can be defined as the knowledge, skills and experience we gain and learn in our lives as we interact with the world. The most important aspect is the involvement of one person’s behavior to another person. Racism and marriage are good examples of sociological phenomena.

Behavioral social phenomena can be considered as the most important sociological phenomena because it deals with one’s behavior according to the environment. Like in Canada people are prosperous and very welcoming that means there is a lot of peace. That’s why Canada is considered as a settler society.

Historical social phenomena shine light on the country’s previous historical events which dictate how one behaves.

Sociology has been explained primarily in three theories; the functionalist, the symbolic interactionism and conflict perspectives.

Functionalist Theory

According to functionalism, society is a structure of consistent fragments that work together in accordance according to functionalism. It is to maintain social balance and a state of stability for the whole. For instance every social institution has its own contribution to make to the society: Economics consumption of goods and services ,and provides for the production, distribution; family creates the context of reproduction, knowledge, nurturing and socialization of children; education offers a way to convey a society’s assistances, governments affords a means of leading members of society; culture to its youth; and religion gives an outlet for worship of the high power and also provides moral guidance.

This theory emphasizes on the connection in the society through the social institutions and how one part is influenced and influences the other one. Case example is the rampant poor performance in school just because both parents are busy working. Due to the change in technology, higher learning is offering all kinds of technical courses making adults to go back and specialize in their line of work. Also, it has reduced the male dominance in the job industry because it has led to women empowerment.

Sociologists argue about manifest and latent as two unique types of functions (Merton 1968). Manifest is intended and popular while latent is more secretive and unintended type of function. For example; education transmits knowledge and skills to the youth in the society that is a manifest function, but also elementary schools provide baby care for employed parents and college make sure that adults are at one level with their mates. This is now latent, rarely noticed and are intended just forced by circumstances.

Canada has balanced the functions and they promote good culture, the editor talks about it being a peaceful, prosperous and very welcoming country. Canada allows immigrants to acquire citizenship and make them feel like their own country.

Conflict Theory

Different from the functionalist theory and the conflict theory views that is society as collected of different association and significance competing for power and wealth. The theory explains how different groups with power benefit from particular arrangements. According to feminist theory we live in a male-controlled society. Basically, one would argue that feminism “demands that existing economic, political, and social structures be changed” (Weir and Faulkner 2004, p.13).

The division of society into 2 comprehensive modules of people the “haves” and the “have-nots” is helpful to the holders of the means of creation. The labors, who may make only maintenance salaries, are refuse admission to the many resources offered to the rich owners. This are what bring about conflict in the society.

Marx in charge of this theory suggested that each society should at least go through economic development. Which is true, and it creates a bridge in the society between the rich and poor.

In Canada this theory is less evident because according to The Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982) emphasizes on the issue of promoting fairness and dignity of all human beings. That way the rich and poor get to treat each other with equal respect.

Symbolic Interactionism Theory

With Symbolic theory it explains how human beings are best defined with their closeness to the environment.

Symbolic theory puts more weight on the circumstance that people behavior is prejudiced by meanings and implications that are continued and shaped through symbolic interaction with others.

Humans relate with things based on the meanings ascribed to the objects and the attached meaning is drawn from their day to day interaction with others in the community. Furthermore, meaning acts in hand with the circumstance in which the individual to use it is in. Therefore, people learn of things from their interactions and tend to pick it as the reality. Reality is what people you spend your life around cognitively believe to be right. We develop concepts built on connections with individuals and those commonly accepted by human in the society. The theory is eminently supported in the Canadian story of the perception of immigrants, but aspects of inconsistencies are also present.

Diversity and change of culture start when the writer completes his studies in Canada and opts to build his life in the country. How the writer perceives the country feeling he is privileged to be there is already a show of the effect that the quality of the environment has imposed on him. The peaceful, prosperous, and welcoming environment is the descriptions of his interactive relationship with the environment that have made him cherish the place. He attributes all these prospects to the diversity of the nation. “This country takes hundreds of thousands of immigrants every year and puts them on the path to citizenship within a span of a few years. People want to go to Canada because they know that in this country, they will have a fair shot in life, and that they will be able to realize their hopes and dreams.”

The political and social values which according to the theory are constructs accepted by many in the society are the drives to Canada becoming a success as far as multicultural bond is concerned. The newcomers are warmly receipted with provision of various cultural and economic opportunities.

This theory also recommends that our intelligence of self is formed by social communication. By seeing how others interrelate with us a label us, we improve our self-concept. By seeing how others vision us, we see a reflection ourselves that Cooley calls the “looking glass self.”

Critical Assessment

In as much as Canada has the best as expressed by the editor, I think the editor forgot to tell us the hardships that come with diversity itself given that one is an immigrant in a foreign country.

Canada’s variety benefit is a multi-generational and cultural enterprise of to nurture a deeper empathetic of how varied nations, to Canadians’ lived-experiences, beliefs and thoughts consume subsidized to construction a varied and complete humanity formed by several cultures. This has in-turn helped them be on the lime light among the G8 countries.

According to the article it has only given us the positive side of diversity which is outlined as follows:

Innovation- people who are from several circumstances and nations don’t work or think alike, thus chiefs to new discoveries and innovations that inspires more outside-the-box thinking. For a better Canada immigrants and Canadians merge and share their minds among each other helping the nation’s growth.

Productivity- has also been brought out in the article. People from all over the world coming together means there will new ideas, different approaches of handling problems and more growth and development. Thus diversity is good news to a nation. Basically, globalization and internationalization are two gifts a progressive country can ask for. When this two are combined it means increased in productivity for the society.

Canada finds it more pleasing to make a home for the immigrants for they come with benefits. Just like everything that has advantages there are limitations too. The article is biased when it does not tell us the challenges Canada face as a result of diversity in their country.

The fact that the editor hides it all means there is a lot to it. All the gender imbalance, sex preference, class, race and physical inabilities are part of the downside of diversity.

Communication barrier- for instance if a Kenyan goes abroad he/she is limited to using only English unless they are lucky enough to have gone to a French or Spanish class and learnt the basics. Canada has lots of immigrants that will mean there is a high chance of communication language barriers and filters that impact internal and external communication. This could lead to isolation and disunity simply because of different ethnical background. Canada would no longer be peaceful but rather chaotic and violence all over.

Discrimination- it will not be public ally displayed but due to racial segregation one will end up being harassed and undermined. In Canada there is the act that was passed to promote equality but there will always be the abuse of superiority and that ends up disadvantaging those on the receiving end.

Climate change- nobody hates diversity because it creates exposure the problem comes in when there is the need to change and adapt. The editor is from Ottawa and is in Canada that means there has been change of climate. One finds it hard especially when the climate change is more hazardous than the one they are conditioned to, this poses as a disadvantage of wanting to get to learn new ideas, people’s culture and explore the world.

Conclusion

All of these stuffs must be dealt with social matters with holistically composed. The value of multicultural relations be contingent on it. In short, they increase issues that might well challenge Canada’s acceptance, despite the fact that the stages taken to improve variety are distinguished in a diversity of fore by the supporters of inclusive.

To keep up with the promotion of diversity worldwide then we should be able to embrace each other’s flaws and learn to correct one another. Be supportive, have acceptance and always have positivity towards change.
