Criminal Justice Organizations

Criminal Justice Organizations 4300 – Final Exam

Please Only Choose ONE Option

***Please Indicate on Your Exam which Option you are Answering***

OPTION 1 (similar to the midterm):

Directions: Please select any four of the six possible questions, provided below, to answer.

Each of your answers should be properly labeled as “Question 1” or “Question 4” for example, and it is ok to list the full question. All answers need to be provided in one single word document that you will upload via Canvas. Please make sure to put your name on your answer sheet.

Each question is worth 15 points. Points will be earned based on several criteria (see rubric on Canvas), this includes proper coverage of the essay topics. Quality answers should be about two double-spaced pages in length and no more than about three pages each. Formatting should be professional, 12-point, Times New Roman font, and should follow APA guidelines for citations and references. If you cite outside the reading materials (which you should) and you are unsure how to properly reference them (like an example social or news media post, or other non-academic citation), just do your best to provide a link/cite and be consistent with your formatting. One single reference section at the end of your answer sheet is recommended. Personal reflection is encouraged, of course, but I am expecting significant effort to find empirical support, philosophical logic, and citations to back up your propositions and ideas.

This is an open-book, open-note, and otherwise open exam, however, exams must be completed alone and without the help of others. If you experience technical issues with uploading your completed exam, please inform me via email and you must include your exam in an attachment in the email in order to earn credit. Late exams will not be accepted and will result in a 0 grade for the exam. If you have questions regarding the final exam or your coursework, please feel free to make an appointment with me.

Pick Any FOUR of the Following Questions:

Question 1 – Chapter 8. It is very costly to hire and train an employee. Discuss possible strategies for employee retention as well as problems that are faced by criminal justice agencies in this regard.

Question 2 – Chapter 9. Please discuss the issues of discrimination that have arisen in the modern workforce, including relevant criticism of affirmative action and other policies. Also discuss relevant cases as they pertain to this debate.

Question 3 – Chapter 10. Describe the challenges and complexities involved with the use of force within the criminal justice field. Also discuss the difficulties faced by those who are granted the ability to lawfully use force against another individual.

Question 4 – Chapter 11. Please outline and discuss the components of effective strategic planning. Describe the four stages of the budget process and the parts involved in each particular stage.

Question 5 – Chapter 12. Please discuss one of the major logical fallacies discussed in this chapter. How can this affect decision making? Give an example (can be more than one example if you wish).

Question 6 – Chapter 13. Please discuss the suggestions for incorporating a human relations style version of Model Management Practices into the criminal justice workplace.

OPTION 2:

Directions: Essay

The concept of “criminal justice” in the United States has been distorted by systemic racism over our nearly 250-year history, and while we may not like to hear it, this is a reflection of who we are as a people. Systemic racism is clearly the most pressing challenge for criminal justice and society more broadly. Using any of the concepts or ideas from this class, write an essay that reimagines the criminal justice system in part or policy, as a whole, or both. If you would like to speak directly to police violence feel free. All topics are open – but the common theme/thread in your response should be focused on criminal justice organizations – like organizational change or barriers to meaningful change, for example. Personal reflection is encouraged, of course, but I am expecting the same amount of effort to support your propositions and ideas with empirical citations and/or philosophical logic that you would put forth in option 1.

As with option 1, formatting should be professional, 12-point, Times New Roman font, and should follow APA guidelines for citations and references. Your response should be about eight double-spaced pages. If you cite outside the reading materials (which you should) and you are unsure how to properly reference them (like an example social or news media post, or other non-academic citation), just do your best to provide a link/cite and be consistent with your formatting. A reference section at the end of your essay is expected.
