Description In preparation for the essay you are required to produce a 500-word essay plan and literature search to be discussed with your module tutor BEFORE proceeding to write the summative piece. Feedback will thus be given to help develop critical skills and check on correct referencing and structure. You will be expected to give an account of your key aims (including working title), your sources (with some comment on the books/articles to be discussed), your approach (proposed structure, examples to be discussed), and some indication of your anticipated findings. This essay plan must be submitted by 5th April 2020.

You are required to develop and submit an essay of 2000 words on a topic to be agreed with your module tutor. The essay must demonstrate a critical perspective on your chosen topic and sources and introduce key arguments/approaches. You should state your principle aims, define your key terms and present all major sources.

Essays are designed to enable you to demonstrate engagement with scholarly research and to develop your academic writing skills. There are a number of elements required of the essay:
• Clear evidence of research using relevant academic sources. There should be interaction with 6-7 published texts and a range of further journal articles and contextual information sources used as a minimum.
• Clear acknowledgement of all information sources in text using standard Harvard referencing technique.
• Objective, critical, cautious and evidential approach to the consideration of sources of evidence and information.
• Meaningful use of illustrative examples to highlight key points.
• Clear and accessible writing style demonstrating subject knowledge and clarity of ideas.
In basic terms this assignment is designed to enable you to demonstrate a process of research and enquiry, meaningful engagement through secondary research with arguments and theories developed by others, and wider historical and contextual investigation. There are many different ways to interpret the prescribed titles and there is every opportunity to focus on aspects of research relevant to your own interests and personal development needs.
