BUSA 2105: Section 2 – Competitor/Market Analysis – Individual

Tasks for Section 2:
In this section you will individually research different competitors. This will require coordination with your teammates to make sure no two people write about the same competitor. Use whatever communication tool to coordinate and document what competitor each person is researching.
Directions for Section 2 – Competitor/Market Analysis – Pizza Hut
In order for the investor to know whether this is a good idea, they need to know about your competition. In this section include the following:

Identify and describe a competitor:

What is the history of the competitor’s organization?
What is your competitor’s product/service?
Where/how do they sell their product/service?
How successful has this competitor been?
What is your competitor’s strengths and weaknesses?

Compare your business/products to your competitor’s:

How is your business/product/service similar to and different from your competitor?
How will your business overcome your competitor’s strengths and pick up the slack on their weaknesses?
Final Project
Overview
In this project you will write basic pieces of a business plan for a startup company that
will produce a product or service of your group’s choosing. Your target audience is an
investor with plenty of money to help you with your startup. The purpose of your plan is
to convince the investor that you are a professional with whom they can trust their
money. Your professionalism will be evident in the quality of your writing as well as the
thoroughness of your research.
This project is a “hybrid” project because two sections are completed as a group and
two sections are completed individually.
Below is the template for your plan. Please review all parts of this plan but don’t be
overwhelmed by the length of these directions. I tend to be very detailed. Also, these
directions will be divided into weekly pieces that are very do-able. Lastly, please read
the notes that I put within the sections.
Each section labelled “group” will include a peer evaluation. If the majority of a group
agrees that an individual didn’t adequately participate, that person’s grade will be
decreased accordingly.
Research
This project will require research. Use reputable websites, interviews with people, and
an MGA librarian to help you find supporting data.
You need to document your sources in a way that is professional and thorough. In other
words, if you state something as a fact, you need to identify the source of that fact in a
way that will allow your investor to find that source.
In documenting sources, I prefer a form of endnotes where you put a superscript within
your document and that superscript refers to a separate Notes page at the end of your
document. The Notes page will have the complete details about the source. However, it
is your decision as to how you document your sources. Here is a link to a page that
describes one way of doing endnotes and footnotes. Here is another link that shows
MLA’s way of doing endnotes.
Remember, the format you choose for documenting your sources is not important. In
other words, you will not be graded on whether your format follows rules such as MLA
or APA, etc. Here is what is important and what you will be graded on:
•
•
•
Consistent use of a format
Format doesn’t interfere with the reading of the document.
Format provides the reader with enough information to easily access or find the
source.
The Project Directions
Section 1 – Product/Service – Group
This section will explain what your good or service is. Remember that your investor
needs to know exactly what they are getting into. This section should address these
questions:
•
•
•
•
•
What is the product or service?
What are its important features? Is there anything that makes it unique?
Where/how do you plan to sell your products/offer your services?
Who are your customers? Describe your target customer. Are they individuals or
businesses or both?
What will your product do for the customer? How does it benefit them or what
problem does it solve?
Notes: This section should be written as an essay. I anticipate the length being 2-3
pages, but remember that quality is always better than quantity. Be concise and
thorough. Your group should meet to make decisions about this section. You may then
want to consider dividing this work up and setting an early deadline that leaves plenty of
time for proofreading and editing. The essay shouldn’t sound like 6 different people
wrote it. Have multiple people proofread. Also, consider using a shared document that
allows everyone to edit at the same time and put comments in. Once the paper is
complete, remove the comments before turning it in.
Section 2 – Competitor/Market Analysis – Individual
In order for the investor to know whether this is a good idea, they need to know about
the competition. In this section you will individually research a different competitor. This
will require coordination with your teammates to make sure no two people write about
the same competitor. In this section include the following:
•
•
Identify and describe a competitor:
o What is the history of the competitor’s organization?
o What is your competitor’s product/service?
o Where/how do they sell their product/service?
o How successful has this competitor been?
o What is your competitor’s strengths and weaknesses?
Compare your business/products to your competitor’s:
o How is your business/product/service similar to and different from your
competitor?
o How will your business overcome your competitor’s strengths and pick up
the slack on their weaknesses?
Notes: This section will require research that is properly documented. (see section at
the beginning of this document). The format for this document should be an essay of 2 3 pages.
Section 3 – Basic monthly finances – Group
Note for this whole section: Yes, this section is the largest section, but remember this is
a super simplified version of calculating profit. Your goal in this section is to ensure
your numbers are backed up with solid research and that you clearly communicate to
your potential investor. With this section, I highly recommend dividing this up among
group members and also working in a shared document.
Numbers in this section can be presented in tables, but tables and the numbers must
also be described in the text.
I believe this essay will take 3 – 4 pages at minimum. This section will also include a
peer evaluation.
•
Product – How much money will you make from your product?
o What will your product cost you?
•
Example: if you are selling coffee, think about pricing out coffee
beans, sugar, cream, and cups. A business typically buys these
items wholesale and in large quantities to get the cheapest
price.
o How will you price your product?
•
Using the same example of coffee, what will you charge for a
cup?
o How many of your product/service do you anticipate selling each month?
o Determine income: (Price – Cost) x number sold
Notes: All numbers in this section will require some research and then
guesstimates (also known as “educated guesses”). In your essay state how
you made your guesstimates. For pricing, consider looking at competitors’
prices on a similar product. For the number sold each month, look around the
internet for good sources or consider going to a nearby business and simply
asking a manager.
•
Employees – How much money will you spend each month on employees?
o
Determine the number of employees.
o
Determine each employee’s pay.
o
Determine the number of hours each employee works.
o
Calculate employee costs per week. Here is a chart to guide your
calculations:
Employee
Pay per
Hours worked Totals
hour
each week
Bob
$10
40
Sally
$8.00
20
Jim
$8.00
20
Total dollars spent on employees in a
week.
o
$400
$160
$160
$720
Calculate employee costs per month: Total dollars spent each week x 4
Notes: For this section, take a look at similar businesses. How many employees
do they have? How many hours are they open? Consider asking an employee.
They might even tell you a range for the pay. You may be able to find a pay range
on a website such as Indeed.
•
Space – How much space do you need and what will it cost?
o
Determine the size of your business. How much space do you need?
Think about space for customers, space for employees to do their jobs,
space for inventory.
o
Find a logical location with that much space. This location can be in any of
the five cities that have an MGA campus. (Macon, Warner Robins,
Cochran, Eastman, and Dublin)
o
Find out what the monthly rent will be.
Notes: Guesstimate the space. If your product is a donut, go to a nearby donut shop
and walk off the space. You may also be able to find online information about space
needed for different types of businesses/products. To determine the rent, you may have
to make a phone call. There are also websites that have retail space for lease and have
the dollars listed. One of these sites is Propertyshark.com. Be sure the rent is
appropriate for the city chosen.
•
Profit – How much money will you make?
In this section you are simply taking the numbers from the previous sections and
doing a calculation as listed below.
Income – (employee costs per month + monthly rent)
Section 4 – Executive Summary Presentation – Individual
In an organized video presentation, briefly summarize the entire business plan. This
would include the sections about the product/service, your competitor analysis, and the
finances. Your audience for the video is the investor. Your video should show that you
are organized, and you’ve done your research. Your video should be no more than 2 – 3
minutes.
Schedule
Week 1 – Section 1 – Product (Group)
Use the discussion board in D2L to determine how your group will communicate. Clearly
state it on the discussion board so that people who show up late will know how to get
involved.
Appoint a team leader who will remind people of what they need to do, remind people
of deadlines and assignments, manage questions or conflicts, and run any meetings.
Review the requirements for Section 1. Read the notes for Section 1. Decide on a
product. Determine how you will divide up the work for Section 1. Determine what
technology you will use to share your document. Set deadlines that leave plenty of time
for proofreading and edits. Determine who will do the final edit on the memo and who
will turn it in.
Week 2 – Competitor Analysis (Individual)
Review the requirements for Section 2. This essay is written individually but requires a
little coordination. Discuss with your teammates what competitor you plan to write about
and make sure everyone on your team is writing about a different competitor. Upload
your individual essays to the dropbox.
Week 3 – Finances (Group)
Review the requirements for Section 3. Divide up the work and set deadlines for first
drafts to be complete. Because of the length of this section, editing may be a bigger job.
Give your editors plenty of time for proofreading and tweaking wording. Determine who
will turn in the final version.
Week 4 – Executive Summary (Individual)
Your individual executive summary video should be completed this week and uploaded
to the dropbox.

restaurant that offers a relaxing and safe environment. By opening our doors to customers, we
hope to establish an exciting and mutually beneficial collaboration between our business and
people who share our goal of excellent food taste. We firmly believe in the power of teamwork
and shared success. We get our name from offering the crispiest crust in the world from our
stone ovens, but we also have salads, wings, and desserts. We are established in Decatur, GA and
look to target families and businesses.
First, The Crispy Crust is a place for every family. A place where we combine delicious
food and nostalgic fun. We make and serve homemade pizza, wings, and dessert pizzas. We also
have an arcade for people of all ages to enjoy. Our menu has a wide variety of styles and flavors,
from the classics to more broad choices. We offer pepperoni, cheese, sausage, etc. for our pizza
options; we have wide selection of flavors for our wings, finally the desserts are classic favorites
simply in pizza form. Let us not forget about our arcade, this wide selection stands for it too; we
have claw machines and exciting virtual reality games. We have what meets everyone’s
expectations of entertainment. Whether you are looking for some delicious food and treats or just
for some fun in the arcade or even both, The Crispy Crust is the perfect place for you and your
family to be.
Second, our pizza desserts and our delivery service are two of the most key features of
our restaurant right along with the arcade on the 2nd story with virtual reality. We will be known
for having the world’s crispiest crust. At The Crispy Crust, we will have a punch card reward
system, rewards for elementary students for reading books, but you must read at least 10 books a
month to get any free personal pan pizza you want. All pizza is made from scratch to make it
even better. At our place of business, we want it to be kid friendly and a wonderful place where
family and friends can come out and enjoy themselves.
Moreover, our restaurant Located at 545 N McDonough St in Decatur, GA, our business
is set up to provide service to both walk-in customers and those in need of delivery services. We
serve a delicious selection of options, such as personal pan pizzas and pizza by the slice, to the
busy local community. We have put our products on local internet directories to ensure
accessibility and simplicity, making it easy for customers to locate us with a few clicks.
Furthermore, we frequently communicate with our customers through a range of mobile systems,
giving them offers on upcoming menu items, promotions, and discounts. Our mission is the same
whether customers want to eat in or take our delicious pizzas home, it is to provide every one of
them with amazing taste and the best service possible.
Furthermore, Crispy Crust will target families with children and businesses. The reason
we are targeting families is because our virtual reality arcade is a fun activity to enjoy before or
after a pizza dinner. Another reason to target families with children is because of our point
reward system that we offer to students who read at least ten books in a month. For businesses,
we will cater to business parties, or they can choose to rent out a portion of the restaurant for
their employees. Everybody loves pizza so our target customer is everyone, but with our arcade
and delivery service, our best business will come from families looking for a safe/fun
environment and businesses.
Last, we are looking to satisfy customers by giving them not only superior quality food
but also a nice time to spend with friends or family in our arcade room. It benefits parents due to
the accessibility of leaving kids safe in a different room while they enjoy time together. For
friends it is also beneficial because eating pizza and being in the arcade room with virtual reality
games is a fun plan. It solves the problem of relieving stress for parents, and the problem of
finding a fun activity to do with friends or dating in a friendly environment.
Crispy Crust provides an experience that caters to the tastes of every member of the
community with its dedication to making the crispiest crust in the world. We offer a varied menu
that mixes both traditional and creative dessert pizzas, and a lively arcade with virtual reality
games. Our punch card and reward system for families with children are a great attraction to get
kids involved academically. We pay attention to our personal pan pizza and pizza by slice with
the crispiest crust you will find in town. Each pizza is made from scratch, ensuring the best
quality and taste. Crispy Crust becomes a part of Decatur, GA, offering not only great taste but
also a warm and inviting environment for both families and businesses.
