Assignment 1

The first assignment is an individual piece of work. It has two elements, a Photo-story with press release and a report to underpin the process.
The report should be 1500 word (+ or – 10%).
The press release should be no longer that one side of A4, double-line spaced type to go with the Photo. (You will be given a selection of photos that you can use. You may adapt them if you wish)
The assignment has been designed to cover learning outcomes 1 & 3 which are: • 1) Assess relevant PR techniques used by organisations in the management of corporate image and reputation • 3) Develop media writing skills for press management
The Brief
You will be shown a video brief about a new consumer product to be launched before Christmas. You then need to research appropriate press in which to launch the product. You should choose two types of publication to discuss in your report:  Trade press  Consumer press (newspaper or magazine)
Give your reasons why the publications are appropriate for the product launch, covering readership, and circulation. You should then also discuss what makes them different to each other, paying particular attention to the target audience, language and content the publications use. Use the media content analysis chart from the PR Toolkit to help you compare and contrast an article from each of the two publications. Then create your Photo-story by writing a release to accompany your chosen picture for one of the publications.
