For this assignment you are to address counterarguments. This is a 3-step process and can be confusing so make sure you read the instructions carefully. For the sake of this assignment you are to take a side. You have to be either Team Dogs or Team Cats. I get it, you can love both, but that’s not what we’re trying to get at here! In a 1-2 page typed response (double-spaced), you should provide three reasons for being in favor of dogs over cats or cats over dogs. You are then to think of the oppositions argument (the counterargument) to each of your three reasons. List each counterargument directly to each of your three reasons. Then – this is where the refutation to that counterargument comes in – think of ways to effectively refute the opposition. You must do so with tact, knowledge and kindness in order to create effective counterarguments. I realize that these may not be your specific beliefs and that is okay. The point of this exercise is to learn the importance and difficulty of addressing counterarguments and how best to refute them. Here’s a brief example:Part I: Cats live longer than dogs.Part II: Many dog breeds have a long life too.Part III: According to vetwest.com, cats, on average, live 12-18 years while dogs, on average, live 10-13 years. While both types of animals have a much shorter life span than humans, it’s more likely you’ll be able to enjoy a longer period of time with a cat versus a dog.
